    Hi,

I bought my DELL around July 11th. IT came w/ a SONY DVD Burner, but just now, I discovered that it refuses to burn anything.

Every disc seems to read, but whenever I try to burn, the drive makes a throttling sound, then it calms, then it throttles, then it calms...on and on. when I cancelled the burn process, the drive refuses to eject the disc. I've killed at least 10 DVD discs already, tried DVD+R and DVD-R, it all doesnt work.

Should I call dell and see if they can replace it?

I would first try updating the drivers. If that does not work, then contact Dell and request a new one. They should replace it under warranty.

Wow, a lot of Sony problems.

Mine is junk (clicks at 90% then fails, all coasters so far). Yours is junk. There's another thread with an out of warranty Sony needing replacement.

Looks like the Sony is FTL with this laptop.

u can try flashing the DVD drive. This should work since i experenced a similar problem and the flashing worked.

Before u try this however make sure it soesnt void any warranties, otherwise sent it back to be safe. :)

also when sending it note the S/N number etc to see if they give u the save drive and claim its a new one.
    :-S

flashing the drive won't void any warranties. With dell there are only a few things that void warranty .

Looks like Dell uses a different Sony DVD burner than the HPs, thanks for the info.

Mine has the same drive, but mine worked fine for the most part. It would burn dvd's fine and play standard dvd's, but when it came to playing a movie file on a data cd, it would get all choppy. Flashing the drive solved the problem!!

Mine seems to work ok although it will only burn at 2.5x max for some reason. This is on 8x DVD+R media. Forget which brand. Will let you know later on when I get home from work.

EDIT: They are Memorex 8x DVD+R media. Don't know what the media code is but I think it is a CMC Mag one. May the 2.5x is because the drive knows it is crappy media.

Thx for all the contributions, guys.

I got my DVD burner replacement, and it's a Philips.
As for quality, the build is quite sturdy, better than the Sony that came w/ the comp. the best part of this drive is...it's QUIET. like. amazingly quiet, even when burning discs. The drive doesn't rumble the entire palm rest when I insert or burn a dvd.

pretty awesome. NEC's dvd burners are a tiny bit better though (I've had one on my old i6000 and have another NEC on the 700m).

I got my replacement E1505 today.

The NEC drive has solved everything. It reads my DVD-R collection and burns on the media I already have. Two areas where the Sony failed me.
