All,
I am having terrible problem with my WiFi (Intel 3945ABG) and I have searched for the answer in the forums but couldn't find anything concrete.
The problem is that every 1-2 hours, the connection stops and in Event Viewer, the following is shown:
The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{F05083FC-4613-427D-B1A1-A9D19541C253} was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.
There are at least 5-10 entries in the event log, each have the same thing as the above! The entries are about 1-3 minutes difference.
This disconnect my game session and VPN connection to the office all the time.
My specs:
- Windows XP Pro SP2
- Intel driver 10.1.1.7 (4/27/06)
NOTE: I haven't updated yet to version 11 since I googled and seems that verion 11 is more problematic
- Wifi application: using MS built-in and not Intel ProSet
- WPA-PSK
- Router: Speedstream with built-in router and WiFi
- IP: Static
Please advise.

I have never seen an intel wireless laptop that never disconnects while playing LAN games, even the signal stregth is excellent... at least this happens to all my friends, Dell, Asus, Compaq, Lenovo, it doesn't matter. they just disconnect, none of their laptop is free from this problem. some of them being worse, like disconnect every single minute. Dell wireless (broadcom chipset) or compaq turionx2 laptop (broadcom) never disconnect when signal is good (1 yr experience), but since you have already bought intel which most of the ppl think is better, you have to troubleshoot it. First you can try to unplug the wireless card and reseat it back, to make sure it is not loose. Second, you should try to use intel driver instead of windows, customize the signal strength to maximum. I have tried this on other laptop but i didn't work.
If there is nothing you can do, claim warranty. or buy a dell wireless card...
i have made some comments here, about intel wireless disconnect problem while gaming on ad-hoc network

Kotrtim,
I am indeed using Intel driver, I am just not using the Intel Proset application. Also, I am not using ad-hoc network to play game.
I have tried the reseat method that you mentioned. So far it's no go. -
Try proset app, increase all the transmission power to maximum, and set roaming aggressiveness to minimum. If it still fails, claim warranty? if you have no more warranty, there is nothing you can do.

Man.. this problem sucks... and my computer is only 6 months old. -
I use the 3945ABG on our business system at work on an E1505 with no disconnects, and I have the same hardware on my personal D820 Latitude with no disconnects. BUT, I do not game on line with these notebooks. On my D820, I reformatted the drive and reinstalled XP Pro with SP2. I am using Intel's own 2/25/07 drivers instead of Dell's as Dell always seems a little slow in posting drivers. I participate over in Dell's forum and the Intel 3945ABG seems to be a very good wireless card. I use to have a lot of disconnects before and it turned out being the router, and not the wireless card. The D-Link DGL4300 is a router that is designed more for gaming than your ordinary router, but they are expensive. There are some routers that have Linux software that can be flashed with better and more stable software that can help reduce drops to nothing. Many people blame the network card when it is a Windows setting, or other hardware or software issue.

When you reinstall XP Pro, how did you get the key to work? I've tried installing XP Pro using my own key (came with the E1505) but the installer never accepted it. I used 3 different CD from various sources (all legit)
- The version of the driver? I am still using the one dated 4/26/06
- Are you using the ProSet application or the built-in WinXP wireless software? -
Few things. First, to reinstall XP, you need to use your Dell provided Windows XP Reinstallation disc. It won't ask you for your key, and you shouldn't have any problem installing it. If you don't have one, call and Dell should ship you one free of charge. Second, try upgrading to the latest driver/software, which is version 11.1.1. You can get it from Dell's support site, or intel.com.
If you still have disconnects, utilize the warranty and get it repaired/exchanged. -
I use the same card in my 6400 on WinXP, with no problems. I use the PRO/Set App. It is much easier to manage than Windows Wireless, IMO.
Be sure that your router is connected and sending a signal. Sometimes routers like to drop connection randomly. Just power cycle it and see if that works. I also suggest that you switch back to he Intel App. Maybe you'll have better luck.
Also, using static IP may not be the best idea, unless of course you have a specific reason as to why you do. Set it back to random assigning.
Good luck! I hope this helps.
