I just bought an E1705 this week to be used for gaming/school. I'm didn't like the prices that Dell had for memory upgrades to I left that as is with the intent of buying my own memory to use immediately upon arrival. The question is, how much should I buy?

I searched around the forum only to find mixed opinions as to whether this laptop supported 2 or 4 gig, which would actually register as 3.2 or whatever. Shouldn't it support 4 gig because the motherboard chip set is the same as their laptops that support 4 gig?

    E1705
    C2D 7200 2.0GHz
    1 Gig DDRII 667
GeForce Go 7900 GS - Will be overclocked =)
    WUXGA+ LCD
    9 Cell Battery

Everything else was the standard...which included Vista...

The 3.5GB you are referring to is prolly for the Windows XP e1705's (XP 32-bit only recognizes 3.5GB), although if you have a 32-bit Vista OS I would assume it would recognize just 3.5GB also?

Yes, it will be staying as 32-bit Vista unless I feel it is too buggy at which point I'll load it up with XP.

I always read that 2gig was the minimum for Vista. Maybe people say that because of all the crappy video cards that pull system memory?

I'm fairly sure your system will only support 2GB and if you are gonna use vista get 2GB. I have used Crucial memory in other laptops and have had no issues.

To get 2 sticks of 2GB ram will be at this price and at this point be a terrible waste of money while 2GB of ram of 1GB each would be more than sufficient for most games, programs and functions. Save your $$$ and get some other stuff.

Vista doesn't need 2gb of ram. It runs fine on 1gb.

I ran vista business fine on 1GB for quite awhile before I upgraded to 2 GB. Although if you only have 1GB vista itself will use up about 40% even before you run any programs.

Just a thought that with Vista's readyboost, it provides a cheap alternative to getting near 4gb without actually spending the $$ on getting 2 strips of 2gb ram.

Thanks for the replies guys. Kept hearing such different opinions from people that I talked to about this. I order 2 gig from new egg for about $115 instead of paying dell $200 to do it for me! I can really see how they make their money.
