How can I get a hold of Jeff?

I have a long string of emails from customer service reps regarding my delay on a replacement e1705. My original came with a 7800go but has major screen/backlight issues as well as light leakage. I would love to take a deal on an M170 now as it is better at gaming, even without the duo core.

Should I just break down and spend a few hours on the phone or just keep up this string of emails?

    Hey

So does anyone no if its going to get the 7800 go back. Is it just a shortage or is the X1400 standard now.

    Cheers

I'm on my E1705 2.0 Core Duo with the GO 7800 right now. Overclocked it today and it made quite the difference...scared me a little though. I think I'll dump it when the 7900 comes out...I didn't get WUXGA or the bluetooth module, so I figure I can sell it at cost price (got it for about $1700) and get a fully loaded 2.16. :)

I don't know if the e1705 delay problem is really from shortage of 7800GO anymore. When Jeff at Dell called me, he told me it's the engineering problem with the card not the shortage. i don't know what to believe but I sure do not want to wait until 5/21 for the e1705 so I went ahead and took up their offer for the m170. I ordered it on 3/30 and already in one day, m170 is done kitting and testing. It's just waiting to be boxed on when the week starts.

Don't know if this has been posted already - rumour is that the 7800 card would be available again around May. Not official, just heard it through the grapvine. Can anyone verify this?

I have a strong feeling the 7900 will be put into it, once the 7900 is released.

And that should be by May

I e-mailed Dell again last night to see where they were at with my gfx card, I just got the reply:

Unfortunately the english is quite bad, so I can't work out whether I'll be getting a 7800 around the middle of April or whether the sales team will be contacting me to arrange a completely different replacement card.

ok guys - i cancelled my dell e1805 today - i finally got a reply and this is what dell said

The part: 256MB NVIDIA GEFORCE is obsolete and no longer
available. The only replacement available as of now is:
    256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory (SKU #: 320-4561),
which is a downgraded card. The upgraded/equivalent card is backordered
as of now and might be available till May end. if you are okay with the downgraded
card, or else the EXG Order will be stuck in IP till May end

so it seems to me either they do plan on upgrading the card at the end of may!!!

    what you guys think?

Depends how badly you need the laptop before May. I don't mind waiting for mine. Also depends on whether you can get a replacement you're happy with.

I pried some information out of Ryan when I talked to him.

The situation with the 7800 Go is that the card does not want to work correctly with most of the laptops. Those who got some already apparently got the ones that did work. Maybe they changed something in the BIOS or whatever, but the response I got was that the cards were not working correctly when placed in the e1705.

He also said that the engineers were expecting to get it fixed by around May 21st (where most of us had our dates pushed back to). He stated they are indeed planning on getting it out, although he could not guarantee the date.

Oh, and for anyone who wanted to get the personalization shield to make it look different (like myself, who will be around someone else with a XPS M170), they're on back-order for 3-5 weeks lead time...if you order it separately I guess, since you could order it with the system and get it immediately. That is according to Ryan. The SKU for the personalization shield for the XPS Gen2 (I think that's what the current ones are) is 311-4994.

I received a e1705 back in late February and have been nothing but impressed with the system. It runs extremely well and after upgrading my RAM to 2 gigs, has run all the games I play very well (only EQII is past its limits).

However, I was unfortunate enough to receive a bad Samsung screen with excessive light leakage. After a month of waiting and a long string of complaints, I was finally transferred to Dell's resolution center. The resolution agent wants to put me in a XPS with comprable specs. Everything on my new order is comprable or better except the processor. I am pleased to have a better wireless modem and graphics card, etc, but they are trying to stick me with a 2.0ghz 760 processor.

I enjoy being able to alt-tab almost seemlessly out of my games and surf the internet and run other programs. Will I still be able to do this with this system? I need advice as to what to do. I have no doubt that the xps is more powerful for gaming, but oc'ing the card sounds a bit more of a hassle than with the 9400. Any advice or someone with a simialr experience please help!

The 2.0 P-M is great man. I have it in my I9300 I can alt-tab out of games no problem and surf the web.

If you are getting a better video card and stuff I would go for it. It is not many times that the processor will be your hang up for anything. Gaming it is usually the graphics card or RAM. So you should be good to go.

Oh yeah, and EQ2 on the M170 should be a dream come true.

    Congrats.

I ordered my E-1705 on March 2, with the nVidia 7800. The original shipping date was April 3, then yesterday it was changed to April 10. his morning I got a call from Dell and was told it would be May 21, or I could instead get the M-170. I elected to keep my order for the following reasons: 1) I do not need the laptop now; 2) I'm hoping by that before that time they will substitute the 7900 which they will hopefully be shipping or taking orders (is does not make sense to backorder the 7800 for the order that people still want filled), and 3) by waiting I can talk Dell into some kind of concession(s) either in price and/or upgrades.

Is any of my thinking flawed? Remember, I do not need the laptop immediately.

I don't think your thinking is flawed...but...I don't think the E1705 will get a 7900 until the XPS series is upgraded. Granted the E1705 won't have the GTX, but it would still discourge people from buying the higher end XPS models.

The might announce the new series of XPS models before that and start to upgrade their existing models, but from what I have seen for the most part they release a new line. Ie my I9300 replaced by the E1705/I9400.

We will have to wait and see. :)

    Just my $.02.

the m170, from what I understand, is a higher quality laptop. Plus, the components in my m170 are either upgraded or comprable to what I have in my 9400.

Also, the 7800gtx is significantly better than the 7800go. The only thing that might be a downgrade is the processor. I complained enough and got an upgrade to the 2.13ghz chip.

I think I will be happy. The only negative I can think of is the gaudy look of the xps.

I agree...I would love the performance on an XPS with the look of the E1705/I9400. :)

Does anyone know for sure if the 7900 will be coming to the e1705/9400 models? It sounds like this is just a rumor... I have heard it mentioned on newsgroups here and there. Has anyone heard this from a credible source?

In my opinion Dell has permanently downgraded the e1705/9400 to x1400 so that these models don't eat into the M170 sales. I hope I'm wrong, I'd love it if they introduced a 7900 version...

I too see a good amount of light leakage on my screen....probably 2-3 inches up from the bottom of the screen. Did you have to do a lot of complaining to them and that's why you're being offered the M170? I may want to approach them with the same issue.....plus, if i could be put into he XPS, that would be an added bonus!!

Also, to inquire about a replacement screen, can I just go online through Dell Support chat? Or should I call them. And since I recently dumped my system and did a clean XP MCE install....would this affect my warranty and leave me with no hope os a replacement screen?

I got my order for the E1705 on March 8th. The sales rep told me that the estimated ship date was "the 20th". I didn't receive my email confirmation until the next day. The ESD on my confirmation then said APRIL 20th. I called to find out what happened and noone would tell me anything. I need this computer for work (and play :D ), but I was seriously pissed. I just wanted to know what the delay was so that I could cancel my order and reorder it with a different part, but they kept giving me the runaround.

Four weeks after I placed the order, I got the call that the new ESD was May 21st, and I was given 4 options: (1) Wait for my order, (2) downgrade to the x1400 card and the difference in price, (3) take an XPS M170 for $750 off, or (4) cancel my order. Waiting was not an option because of work. If I wanted to downgrade, I would have chosen a different computer to begin with. The comprable M170 only came out to $200 less and wasn't a dual-core. I spent two whole working days getting transferred and disconnected, trying to get Dell to ship me the computer with the X1400 then dropship the 7800 when available. They finally came back to me and said (real quote) "These are the only choices we can offer you. Take them or leave them." No kidding.

Needless to say, I started looking for a replacement. After agonizing over the Acer TravelMate 8204WLMI, HP nx9420, and the (hesitant) Dell Precision M90, I finally decided on the Acer yesterday. I made one last check on the order status of my Dell (just in case), and it was still hung up in "processing". So I placed my order for the Acer.

And when I got home from work today, I had a message on my machine that the Dell had shipped! I tried desperately to cancel my order for the Acer, but it shipped this afternoon and it's non-refundable.

Now I don't know what to do. The E1705 is what I originally wanted. It has all the specs I was looking for. But during this time, I found another computer that's supposed to be faster according to PC Mag (except for games) and costs about $1000 less. The Acer isn't perfect, but it's an awesome looking and performing machine. It also has a docking option that includes a DVI connection for work. The Acer forum group here is top notch and they seem to have most of the early issues handled. Not to mention that I'd love to call back Dell and tell them to "Take This Brick and Shove It.

What should I do? And if I decide to keep the Dell, how do I return a non-refundable laptop? Refuse delivery?

If you can not return either one, then just sell the one you don't want on ebay. Don't open the box either, it will sell for more if it is factory sealed. You will probably lose $150 or so, but life goes on...

I want to get a 7800 based E1705 myself but they are scarce now, even on ebay. Like you, I want a laptop for work and play :) I don't want the XPS M170 (single core 533Mhz FSB) so I will wait to see if a nVidia 7900 model comes out soon. I keep hearing that it will be coming out any minute now...

So will the inspiron be back with the 78? or hopefully the 79? Could anyone give me a rough estime? Because I want a laptop but the x1400 just wont cut it for me!

    thanks a lot.

    hey,

This sounds so spammish..but it's your lucky day. I have some of those cards for sale. Check out my sweet feedback on ebay..100%...

If anyone's interested, e-mail me. If you really want to feel me out..I'll even give you my phone number. I'm not going to screw anyone. I'm saying this because I really am getting tired of getting raped by ebay's fees. And want to sell direct to gamers, not through ebay. You are defined by the company you surround yourself with.
