I've had my E1705 for a few days now, and I'm still loaded with questions. I find the display very dim when running on battery power only. Is there a way to make it brighter (understandably at the cost of using up more battery power)?

    which screen do you have?

If you have the matte screen, its not very bright. You can put it at maximum brightness (FN + up arrow), but besides that, there isn't much you can do unless you want to send it back and get a new screen.

If it is the truelife screen, it should be very bright.

Sorry, I left that piece out - I have the truelife version.

The brightness seems just right when I am plugged in, but not that great when I am unplugged.

k, then you just need to adjust it when you are on battery (FN + up arrow).

You can also change the setting in quickset or the BIOS so that when you are on battery, it will be full brightness.

    Actually...disregard....

I tried what you said with the Fn + up arrow and it worked!

It was previously only at about 1/3 brightness in unplugged mode.

    Thanks so much.

Thanks again SouthernGirl - I can't wait until the point where I can contribute more than just questions to the board.
