How many of you are experiencing an awful rattle when the DVD drive is running?

Everytime my DVD-Drive starts, it starts rattling like crazy, to the point where I just cant stand it anymore.

The rattles seem to stop if I firmly push and hold the exterior part of the drive.

Is this just my E1705 or is this a common Dell issue?

This is common problem for any disk that may be out of balance in a high speed drive. Dell's come with NEC, Sony and TSST drives. In my case the NEC has been awesome. Do you know which drive you have? You can check under hardware manager. Have you tried different disks?

My E1505 came with a Philips DVD-RW and it has the same awful rattle which stops when I push the tray.
What is the fix for this (if any) ?

Had a Sony 1st with same issue like yours. The Sony drive it is a re-badged LiteOn drive.
Got a TSS Corp (Toshiba/Samsung) which was a little better than Sony.
I have a NEC drive now, works great!

I just started to have problems with the drive myself(Sony), wouldn't burn or make data CD's and started to get pretty noisy. I called dell tech support last night and went through the routine with them and they're sending a new one. So if you can't fix the problem call like jim6172 suggested.

I don't have this specific problem with dvd drive(sony), but you know one time managed to close the tray and the dvd got stuck between the dvd drive and chassis, which locked the dvd drive in place until I used a lot of force to pull the dvd tray back out, severely scraping and damaging the dvd in the process. Since then I have taken extra care with inserting dvd's in my e1705.

Could be your faceplate has a very loose fit on the drive. Does it do this with every disks or just a few?

If your totally unhappy, give Dell a call before warranty runs out. Very easy to change out.

Mine does this on occasion(sony drive) but not often. A friend of mine has a Gateway, and the rattle on his when it started to spin fast was deafening It turned out that all the screws on the bottom around the drive were loose(not even finger tight) after tightening those up quite a bit it is barely audible now :)
