I was given an E1705 that had a trashed display (short horizonal lines throughout, immediately at power on), even the DVI output was trashed, so I assumed a bad video card.

It has an nVidia Go 7800GS and WUXGA. I removed, cleaned, and reinstalled the 7800GS GPU card and now the laptop works great! Put on Windows 7, everything functions perfectly.

Considering my net investment is ZERO, I was thinking of upgrading the lowly T2300 with a T7200 or T7250. 'Bout $80-$100 on ebay.

I wasn't sure if the E1705/9400 would take a T7250 as it is an 800Mhz FSB chip. I did see some on ebay with T7250's, but they also had the ATI X1400, so I'm not sure if there are different system boards for the T7200 vs T7250.

Anyone know if I can just pop in a T7250 to help make this an even sweeter system?

    Thanks!

Assuming you've got a 945 chipset in the E1705, you can only use Socket M processors. The T7250 is a Socket P processor. I'd bet the T7250 E1705s on ebay are a mislisting, since, as far I know, the E1705 never shipped with anything but a Socket M and 945 combination...

What is confusing (and it's not that I don't believe you), is that Intel's own site shows the same socket supported for the T7200 and T7300--
    Sockets Supported PBGA479, PPGA478 (T7200) and
    Sockets Supported PBGA479, PPGA478 (T7300).

I don't see how they are different...

The problem is that both sockets have the same number of pins, though there are one or two pins that are positioned differently such that a Socket M (T7200) chip won't fit in Socket P (T7300) or vice versa. Just remember that anything with a 945 chipset is Socket M, and that everything with a 965 or 45 chipset is Socket P.

On the processor side, there's a list in the guide in my sig that tell you which processors are Socket M or Socket P.

Go download and run CPU-Z, and check the Mainboard tab; it will tell you what chipset you have. Also, in the CPU tab it will tell you your socket as well.

Thanks for the info. It's clear to me now that the T7200/T7400/T7600 are the only possibilites in the T7x00 series.

The T2300 you have is about as fast as a T5200.
So in essence if you upgraded to a T5300, T5500, T5600, T7200, T7400 or T7600 processor you would notice an increase in processing power.

I recommend getting a T7200 or T7400, they are the best bang for the buck socket M processors

You should download I8kFANGUI, and crank the fans up. It will keep your system running cooler and it will increase its lifespan
