I purchased a new 120GB hard drive to upgrade my existing 60GB drive. Using Acronis Migrate Easy trial version and tried to clone my internal 60GB onto a new 120GB drive that I put into an external USB case. Now I have a BIG PROBLEM. The cloning seemed to go OK but when I removed the 120GB drive from the USB case and installed it in my laptop it would not boot. I just got a blue screen with this message "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer". I put the original 60GB drive back in and the new drive back in the external USB case. I rebooted the computer and erased the 120GB drive but now the computer recognizes the new 120GB drive as a 60GB drive.
Can anyone tell me why the cloning didn't work and how to get my new drive back so it is recognized as 120GB?

I had the same problem there is a software by CMS that works or used to. I had to clone the small partitions with ghost then copy the big portion with seagate software. The next time though I am trying the CMS route. I think it takes a little while but I have seen it work well. Yes it will cost a little more but the headaches might be worth it and you need an external USB drive case but I think you already know that. Mine was on a first Gen XPS. But I think it all still works pretty similarly.

LapQuest, Thanks for the reply. I used Aronis software because when I went to seagate web site they recommended this software because their disk wizard program was currently under reconstruction and this was supposed to do the job.
I still need to solve the problem of the 120GB drive being recognized as only 60GB before I can procede with cloning my old drive.
Was you running Meadia Center 2005? -
check out the disk management console in windows and see if it just only made a 60gb partition and just left the other space not partitioned.

Have you tried the *Scan for new hardware* in the device manager? Just a thought.

Yes, the device manager recognized the disk but only as 60GB not 120GB.
I still haven't found anyone with a solution to this problem -
I would install the drive in your laptop, boot into the BIOS, and see if the drive is identified.
If you have the XP install disk, boot it up and use the recovery console. Use the fixpart utility to destroy all partitions on the drive and then set up the new partition(s). I also recommend doing a fixmbr and fixboot. fixpart is a command line program, so you'll need to read up on the commands. If you just want to remove all partitions, type "clean".
