If you select 1GB memory when ordering the E1705 is this actually 2 512K DIMMs?

It doesn't tell you... So im assuming it does.

Also its much cheaper to buy your own RAM and put it in yourself. Although at the moment dell has made it "free" to get the 1GB, so there is no benefit in downgrading to the 512MB.

^^What he said. I wanted to go 2GB but the free 1GB upgrade will hold me over until the new year. And hopefully by then 667MHz memory will have dropped in price. At which time I’ll be placing an order for 2GB 667MHz on NewEgg.com.

It does make a difference if you want two gig of 667. You could upgrade to 1 gig from Dell for $140 and buy a gig from Crucial for $200. This would only work if Dell gives you a 1 Gig DIMM. Otherwise I would go with the free Gig of 533 from Dell and sell it and buy 2 Gig of Crucial. I guess I could call Dell and ask but it is probably 2 512s since that would be cheaper.

Yeah they don't specify if it's a single DIMM or not. I'm just inferring when they say it's dual channel memory it uses up two banks.

I think it is 2 512Ks because the one Gig 667 is $140 extra and the 2 Gig 667 is $400 extra. I could buy 2 Gig from Crucial for the same and still get the 2-512Ks from Dell without adding extra.

You get 2 x 512mb sticks. I just bought 4 1GB DDR2 667mhz sticks from crucial (about $1100.00 CAD with taxes, duty and shipping) for my two inspiron 9400's. Anyone want to buy some 512mb DDR2 667mhz sticks. lol. I've got 4 of those to get rid of now!

I think you could have ordered 1gb sticks from dell at time of order for more $$. I would have just returned my ram to dell and got it from them but they don't list the fast 667mhz ram as available on their website and in the end I just couldn't be bothered with screwing around with dell. Next time I will just order it with all the ram possible to begin with...

BTW - When I pulled out the 512mb sticks that shipped with it from dell I was surprised to see stickers on the back of 3 of 4 of the ram that says "Customer Sample"

What do you make of that??? I'm wondering if that's now going to cause me problems trying to sell these - people might think they're, well, samples not the real thing....???
