    Hello all,

I received a E1705 as an exchange a week 1/2 ago but I have a problem with it. It gives off a humming / buzzing type sound that pulsates. I played with the settings in bios for the hard drive regarding quite or performance and i still heard noise in both occasions. I hear this noise coming from around where the power connector is plugged into and it is not a fan or hd type noise as it sounds different.

I called dell regarding the issue and they had me run numerious tests and they concluded that the issue lies with one of the fans so the just sent both fans and also heatsink replacement. I do not believe this is a fan issue as the noise is still heard with the computer off! (but dell says otherwise) Does anybody know what this might be? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Also the specs for the laptop are as follows if this is needed:

t2400 duo core 1.83 ghz w/1gig ram w/nvidia 7800 go and samsung wuxga screen.

just for giggles, maybe try plugging into a different outlet or into a UPS/Power strip? i doubt this is where you're problem is, but maybe just try it to see what happens.

Welcome to my world Octupi. I've been following your posts on Dell's support forum also. Support is telling me the same thing (it's a fan issue). Kind of hard to be a fan issue when the noise is apparent when the laptop is powered off.

I firmly believe it is one or more of the following:

    1. Faulty AC Adapter
    2. Faulty battery (in my case a 9-Cell)
    3. Faulty Motherboard

Last time I spoke with support I requested they send out a replacement battery and adapter to rule those two out. They refused. They are sending me a box to send the thing back for them to diagnose. I certainly am not 'satisfied' with this, but since I also have some light leakage, they agreed to replace the LCD also while it's at the depot.

    Arggghhhh...

    Update:
The 'box' just showed up to send the lappie to the Depot for surgery. You think Dell would provide a better box for 'Rapid Response Depot' service. This isn't even a box. It's paper colored brown... LOL When they ship out your system to you they protect it like a tank - wonder why they can't do it for repair calls. Oh I know, money. I feel abandoned by Dell.

    Sorry, I shouldn't 'vent' here. :(

I tried a different outlet just to see but problem is still there. It also happens when the battery is being used. I tried with just ac only with no battery and still there!!

They tell you they will ship a box but the box is just a standard box from dhl. when i had to ship my old laptop i had before they gave me this one the guy from dhl didnt even know he was supposed to provide a box! he just went into his truck and gave me box and asked if it would fit and luckly it did. if you think the box you got was flimzy looking then look at the box you get when it is returned!!

Just a heads up.... make sure that everything you had on your laptop is there when you get it back as when they returned my old laptop they didnt bother to put my bluetooth card back in so it took some *****ing but they ended up just sending me another one after i got my e1705.

Thanks for the info Doc Oc --- I took pictures of it also. Oh man that feels lame, but with the trouble you have with Support these days I'm starting to think its necessary. Post if you work out your electrical buzzing noise. We seem to have the same issue in that regard.

    Good Luck!

As an afterthought, I keep thinking I should just call up Warranty Sales and upgrade my warranty to on-site (they said it'd be $70 more). At least that way I'll have the tech come out and fix it. Only thing holding me back is I keep thinking the depot is the better choice as far as troubleshooting goes.

Any thoughts?? I haven't called DHL to pick up yet --- The lappie is in its 'box' waiting to go.. Hmmmmm...

if you have the money then yes, i would call up sales and obtain the onsite service. I have onsite but i had to send my old unit in only because they had sent a tech out twice and because i had mutiple issues that phone service was not able to pin point problem. I am not sure if you can have tech come out for your current issue once you obtain onsite service. they may still want u to send unit in but who knows?
