Ugh I still haven't found the laptop that allows me to hit the purchase button. I thought the E1705 would be it, but seeing a few laptops with the white/light colored borders around the screen turned me off. How does everyone else find the look of the E1705?

So that leaves the XPS M170. The look of it is fine by me, but not sure I feel comfortable paying $2500-3000 for a slighter older technology chipset

    sigh

Wish there were more 6lb 15.4 inch and 7-9lb 17 inch laptops with more powerful video cards

Markus, I think it's wise to wait and see what the market does. I think you might see something else you like better.

I have the E1705 and I like the color scheme. I do not mind the white borders but I see that a lot of people do. To me it looks better than the run of the mill black or gray laptops on the market.

I was in the same situation. Today I ordered an e1705 myself. However, if you go with the 7800 VC, the shipping gets delayed until April.

SO, if a better value comes along in the next month, I will cancel my order. I wanted to jump on the e1705 though because I hear the coupons Dell offers will continue to decrease.

If you are looking now I would opt for the E1705. If that had been out when I picked up my XPS I probably would have gone that direction instead. It seems like a very well kitted machine and I am guessing that we will see the XPS get a chip upgrade sometime soon. I would hope either AMD or the new intel Duo.

This is not to say that the XPS would not make a great choice. I love mine except for the wifi problem that I have been having.

I think he meant light leakage, not the bumpers.

Depending on what your WiFi problem is.. consider replacing it with an Atheros Card :)

I ordered another card from Dell. Not sure which one it was but I told them I did not want Intel. Hopefully this fixes the problem once and forall.

I've had the intel 2915 and 2200 cards in my systems, in fact my Sony still uses the 2200. There not bad IMO but I have heard of many users with issues. What might I ask was the problem with yours?

My unti had been back to Dell twice now in a month for wifi issues. The main was that the card would loose connection and then the wifi light on the laptop would go off (thread about this whole issue). Once the light was off the connection was really unreliable and had to be reset. I found lots of people on the net that seem to be having sumular issues and one suggestion was to get a non Intel card to fix it.

without saying too much...how long would you wait, as i also been debating the very same issue......i had made the decision to get the e1705....my luck once i make this decision there is a delay in shipping...

Question....if i order can i cancel or change or prior to shipping of unit? and would they charge me anything b/c i changed order?

    Thanks

Do you know which intel wifi card you ordered with your M170.. Was it the 2200 or the 2915? (the 2915 is the one chosen by default in the system configurator)

I had the 2200.. I had three of them all with the same problems. I have ordered a non Intel one now and hope that will fix the problem. From what I have heard it should so my fingers are crossed.

Other than that the computer is great..

Good luck with that. It sucks to have a machine with constant problems. Did you order the non-intel card from Dell?

You should not have a problem at all. It is best to cancel or change the order before the configuration begins, but you can still do it after that. The only thing is that you will waite a little longer as they will build you a new laptop. You actually have up untill 21 days of original purchase (not 21 days after you receive it) to return it without being charged. You will only lose out on the shipping!

From what I've seen everything starts either when it is shipped or when it is received....I am pretty sure its 21 days from shipping or received date. That wouldn't make sense, they don't even charge you for the thing until it ships so why would they have a return policy that would start before you had it?

I know it does sound rediculous, but I just went through a situation with Dell, and they assured me that the 21 days starts from date of purchase. Maybe the support had the wrong info, but I am positive that he told me 21 days from pruchase.

Well I just copied this from Dell's warranty website
If Dell assured you that it is 21 days tell them to shove it and send them the link. I had a situation with Sony on replacing an InfoLithium battery that came with the camera and I sent them the link saying that it is under warranty and they took care of the problem so I suggest you do that with Dell!

I did order my replacement card for my XPS M170 from Dell. Figure I will test it and if it doesn't work just send it back to them. They did have one that was not an Intel chip so it was the easiest place to get it from.
