Any info appreciated...I have a dell e1705 since 2006. Has been a great machine until yesterday. Boots up to desk top fine, 3 to 8 seconds and screen goes blank. Or maybe I should say very very dim, I can faintly see the icons. The unit works fine on an alternative monitor. The screen will even momentarily light up as I switch from lcd to alternative monitor, but not more than a few seconds. Should I toss into the heap and purchase another or what? Thanx for any input.

I'd call Dell and run some diagnostics. It does sound like the lcd, and you might be able to get a cheap replacement from them. If you're happy with your e1705, no sense in spending a lot more to get a whole new lappy. :)
