E1705 delayed twice, worth the wait?

I've place an order with Dell for E1705 at the end of February. It was scheduled to ship 3/7/06 but then was delayed to 3/16/06 (today). I just got a call from them earlier that it will be delayed again until 3/23/06. I don't know if I should keep on waiting only to find out that it will be delayed again for the third time. But I also don't want to go back to square one and look for the place and the model I want again.

Here's my dilemma, I think my deal with Dell is very good. This is what I ordered..

    E1705 Core Duo 1.83 GHz
    1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667 MHz
    256MB Nvidia GeForce Go7800
    80 GB hard drive
    2 Yr Limited Warranty
Total $1662 (tax and next business day shipping included)

I remember going with Dell because I couldn't find any deal as good as this, with 17" and all other things I customized.

Is there a long wait of Core Duo chip or something that's causing this delay? Anyone knows? Do you think I should wait? If not, is there anything that come close to my configurations and price? Please help. Thank you.

They are probably waiting for one part. Could ask what the delay is for and choose something else. I don't know where you'll find anything better for the same price.

The Go7800 has been in short supply for sometime and Dell has actually taken it off the e1705 page.

Not sure if that affects you though since you ordered yours over two weeks ago.

you might consider asking them if a configuration with the ATI X1400 would ship more quickly if you're okay with that graphics card.

I didn't want to wait so I decided to cancel my order and go with the ATI card. There is a really good coupon for $750 off of $1999, and you can get an additional $35 dollars off on ebay for $1. You should do a quick config in Dells store and then decide if you want to re-order.

They've been short-supplied on the nVidia card for a few weeks now. I was thinking they would have it in another week or two, but maybe not.

Like Abaxter and Arisen said, you can order the ATI card, then upgrade to the nVidia card later. Dell is nice about that, and will let you update your card without voiding your warranty. The new card won't be cover in your warranty, but the rest of your laptop will be.

I just called Dell and was told that the delay is due to certain parts shortage, one being the processor. I did do another configuration with ATI card on Dell site as suggested but got 2GB DDR2 at 553MHz and 60GB 7200RPM drive instead of 1GB DDR2 at 667MHz and 80GB 5400RPM. The total is relative close to my previous order ($10 difference). But there's a chance that the ATI card can delay my order also. sigh....

How is this ATI X1500 compare to nVidia Go7800, considering both are causing the delay.

You can get a comparison here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=39568

but the X1400 card is the medium between integrated and the nVidia 7800 card. One tip, I would go with the lowest amount of memory possible, then buy it from newegg.com or somewhere else. You'll save about 200 bucks. Right now, you can get 2gb (2 sticks) for about 160 at newegg.com.

DONT cancel that order ! the 7800 card is much much better then the x1400 and even the x1600 , in fact Im sure that many who missed it would be happy to have your order as is .

Regarding the memory the advice above is right but : notice there is new memory for the faster FSB 667 it costs more then the old one I think the 160$ is for 533 FSB .

Do NOT cancel your order! Listen to the guy above me! Many people WOULD want your laptop as is since that 7800GO graphics card of yours is now off the website! If I were you I'd wait for it to ship, even if it was delayed 2 times more!

That graphics card's worth it. You'll see it being worth it when you get the laptop.

I will wait. 256MB Nvidia GeForce Go7800 worth the wait. It is great for many thing. If you decided to cancel, I will jump in and take it.

I also would stick it out just for the 7800Go. It is leaps and bounds better than the X1400 that is offered now. Once you see some of the benchmarks you will be happy that you didn't cancel the order.

    Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the advice. Just to update everyone, I DID NOT cancel my order. I really like my configuration with Dell and the price was good so I decided to keep it. And Dell said that they'll try their best to ship my order by next Thursday so one more week won't be so bad. I'm keeping my fingers crossed thou.

    Thanks everyone.
