Alright, so I downloaded the new Xtreme-G drivers for my 7800 last night (they were the 84.xx)......everything seemed to work properly. I was maybe 20 minutes into a session of BF2 when I got strange happenings on my screen. There were portions of the map that would randomly turn black, as if that portion had been cut out....very weird. The frame rate was also a little twitchy.....this never happened with the 83.90 drivers I had previously, so what are your thoughts?
Should I revert back to what was working perfectly, or is there something else I should try to make the new drivers work...is it even a driver issue??

What do you have your 7800 OC'ed too?
I DL'ed the 84.12's as well last night, haven't gamed on them yet. I haven't even had a chance to check temp's on my computer/gpu since the new download. It sounds like you are getting artifacts. Are you running a 3rd party fan controller? When I game, I blow the fans full out. It keeps temperatures sub-80 usually (as shown on display properties) -
The settings were at 365/891....I think, I don't have my notebook with me at work, so I can;t be for sure, but they were in that area. It was just a little shocking to me...I'm relatively new at notebook gaming, and the past drivers never gave me any problems, so I didn't know what to look for...thanks for the suggestion though.
Also, if you've overclocked, do you ever notice that 1.) Sometimes the clock settings don't stay on there after you turn off your system and 2.) The detecting optimum settings option doesn't always give the same clock settings, it can vary each time you do it.... -
2.) your optimal settings will change based on GPU/CPU temperatures and some other factors. There is always going to be a degree of variance, it is normal.
I am still testing to make sure 374/909 is ok to run 24/7. When I get home I will run some stress tests and game a bit to see what happens. I experienced no problems with the 83.90 v2.25, but we will see what happens. -
1.) I actually went home for lunch and figured that one out...duh!? I guess my mind was somewhere else at 2:00 this morning =)
2.) I assumed that was the case...thanks for the confirmation. Yeah, let me know how those clock setting work out for ya.
Here's another little bit of something that has been eating at me...mainly cause I'm not sure what to make of it. At my current driver (83.90) and clock settings (they are a little less than those i posted earlier, not by much though) I am again able to game smoothly at max settings in BF2 (no AA of course, it can do it, I just don't think its worth the performance hit)....however, when I use a scoped weapon, say the sniper rifle, I'm occasionally seeing little white specks, which could be artifacts, but I ONLY see them when viewing through a scope, all other times, the game is buttery smooth and my GPU temps actually stay under 80*....by the way, thanks for passin along the knowledge to a noob like myself, I appreciate it. -
CaliDell,
Hey, I'm pretty new at this as well. I just read a lot, and experiment alot.
The issue with "artifacts when you pick up a weapon or look through a scope sounds odd. If you have time, maybe reinstall the game. If you blow your fans hard, or if your temp never rises about 80, I see no reasons why you should get artifacts. Also, make sure when you change drivers you use a driver cleaner to make sure the old ones are completely gone and the new ones have a clean slate to install over.
I am still fighting myself over my clock settings. I want high clock settings but don't want to mess with a volt mod. I am experiencing no artifacts and heat in the ~81 degree range. Why would this not be safe to run at? I am still out there looking for confirmation, I just hate thinking I am not getting all I can out of the system (safely).
E1705 driver glitch?
