I have owned a 1705 for a year and just purchased a bigger battery I originally had the 6 cell, and now got the 9 cell when I charge the battery it makes this high pitched noise like off and on every few seconds while charging.

I checked to make sure this battery not on the recall list and it wasn't. Is this normal for the 9 cell? Or should I exchange this and get a new battery? other then that seems to work fine, but the noise is annoying My older 6 cell battery does not make this noise.

    Thanks

I have a 9 cell battery and it doesn't do that. I'd exchange it.

hmm this is interesting i called up dell support

had to go through a lot but in the end they had me upgrade the bios i was at the original A00, I got one of the first 1705 so I guess had no reason to update BIOS

anyway they had me go to A08 and the noise went away

either that or was jsut coicendence but at this point they feel confident nothing wrong with battery and will see if it comes back

the interesting thing is when i called up dell support they wanted to troubleshoot first , and had me upgrade BIOS from A00 to A08, was a bit nervous doing that becuase who knew what BIOS might do but it actually appeared to fix the noise and go away

i was not expecting it to do anything to be honest

i doubled post yesterday by mistake did not realize each post has to be approved

but new story, i now notice the noise when the battery gets over 90% it almost seems to be there when it is trickling charging

I am just going to call up dell and demand an exchange

Dude, you want to try to return that pretty quickly. My mom had that same noise on her Sony, and one time I put my hand on the battery brick, and it was pretty much burning. I'd say send it back, because it can have an effect on your laptop.

my 2 off batteries has done that for over a year and they are 9 cell, ive had no problems at all with it. I say dont worry i think its something to do with the charging circuit but im not bothered at all.

denec, the noise you hear is the DC to DC inverter noise in the charging circuit inside the laptop. Did Dell ask for the old battery back?

    Glad I'm half def ;)

Both your links are for the 80W batteries but guessing different manufactures; Sony and something for people who don't want a Sony battery? ;)

I’m at Dell Headquarters in Austin, Texas and I just came across this thread and wanted to add. If the AC adapter and battery have both failed to fix and latest bios didn't either then the next thing to try is the motherboard. It sounds like you're probably still under contract if the other parts were replaced so I would try that next. You can either contact tech support via phone or if you're in the US I can set it up for you, otherwise I can point you to the right support channel. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
