I've only had my E1705 for a little over 3 weeks and already I am having to ship it back to the depot because it looks like I have a bad motherboard.

Symptoms: 1. Computer shuts down, and will not restart until it cools for about 30 minutes. It then shuts down after about 5 minutes. 2. I loose my internet connection during large downloads. I've taken out the wireless card and it is extremely hot.

We (Dell tech) stripped the machine down to bare minimums, and it shuts down even in BIOS.

    Dell E1705, T2600 Core Duo 2.16, 256MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON X 1400, 80 gb, 2 GB ram.

Or possiblity its the fan, not the motherboard.

    yes.

overheating can be the result of many many things which leads to m/b death.

if things were really hot, i suspect the dead m/b is simply what happened because of the heat.

I have to agree that's a heat issue. My old Toshiba with it's pentium 4m was very prone to overheating and would behave that way. Yeah that sucks. I know how frustrating that can be. I lost a few half written term papers (I was to stupid to save) that way. I'm glad Dell tech is working with you.

Yes, Dell Tech Support in this instance has been marvelous (my other experience was absolutely terrible). It is just disheartening that I will be out my new computer almost as long as I've had it (I'm guessing it will be about a 3 week turnaround).

I agree that it could be something with the fans, as they don't come on no matter what.

My downloads cut off and the wireless connection to my personal router goes offline temporarily (neighbors' still works h owever..), should I be concerned?

Kylerg - That is the same symptom I had. I would start a download, and maybe a couple of hours later it would disconnect. I would show that I was still connected, but I had no internet access. I would have to reset my cable modem and router, restart the machine, then I could regain internet access. I was in the process of trouble shooting it, as I thought it might be my issue, when I had the problem of my computer shutting down. On reflection, I think the heat issue was related to the loss of internet. As I mentioned previously, my wireless card (1390 a/b/g) was very hot when I removed it.

The good news is you have a Core Duo in your E1705 instead of a P4m. With me it was a reoccuring problem I dealt with threwout the life of the computer. Dell tech will fix the problem and return it to you hopefully in good working order.

Just a quick note of praise for Dell. I just contacted their customer support, and instead of me having to ship my damaged E1705 back to the depot, they have agreed to just send me a brand new replacement.

    Thank you Dell!

That is awesome. The next time I have time I have a lot of work to do on this. I have to reset: HD, DVD, RAM and at my own disgression tighten the hinge a little.

I don't think the wobble will go away..I think it's me being anal about it.
But I shouldn't have to do all that other crap after an $1800 purchase.
