I haven't heard of it being too bright but with any laptop you can always turn down the brightness.

I haven't seen the WXGA+ screen in person, but I would imagine that it would be bright enough to see well (maybe a tad or two darker than the TrueLife screen). The TrueLife screen is excellent, but there is slight light leakage on most models. If the top screen brightness is too bight, you can always turn it down to your liking.

I'm wondering what the WXGA+ looks like on a 17". I'm looking at the Precision M90, but the way I can get it is with a WXGA+, not the WUXGA. That seems like it might be a little low resolution for 17". I'm running XGA+ (1400x1050) on my Latitude right now, and it has a 14" 4:3 LCD.

Personally I would recommend going with the WUXGA w/ Truelife. I had the matte screen, and it is horrible. It was really dull plus the colors seemed to be off. It just wasn't a good screen for 17in. I ended up paying $500 to get a new truelife and installed it myslef.

Ouch! Would dell not work with you to exchange the laptop? 15% re-stocking fee is cheaper than 5 big ones.

I first had the samsung XGA+ as well. I liked the resoulution and nothing else. i thought the back light was not centered with light washing out 2 inches up the bottom of the screen.

My LG truelife is way better but way too much resolution for my tastes

I use the 120 DPI setting so that my reading glasses don't explode. Text scales with no problems but most web sites, as this one, look like !##$%! with any bitmapped icons and a few programs mung up their text boxes with cut off text.

I'll live but sure wish dell could offer sony LCD's :D

I was afraid of that. Here's the thing. I'm gettinga pricematch deal from Dell, but if I change any of the specs, including LCD, I lose the deal and have to pay full price (because it's a price-match). Here's the deal that I'm getting. Please let me know if I should take the deal and just live with the WXGA+ or look elsewhere:

    Dell Precision M90
    Core Duo T2600 2.16 GHz
    WXGA+ 17" LCD
    256MB dedicated Quadro FX 1500M (basically a workstation 7900GS)
    100GB 7200 RPM hard drive
    1GB 667MHz RAM
    CD-RW/DVD ROM
    Windows XP Pro
Intel wireless a/b/g Dual-Band Mini Card

All this for the grand total of only $1975. The same specced machine without this deal: nearly $2700. I'm stuck. I really want this computer, and it's a great deal, but I'm afraid of the screen.

I am very happy I went with the Truelife display on my e1705. The pictures are so much more detailed compared to my older laptop with 15" Matted screen. The resolution does make things smaller, but I upped my DPI and changed the IE text size to a larger setting and very happy now. Plus I read that Vista is supposed to make resolution easier to adjust later. Why skimp now, when Vista is around the corner. If they made a WSXGA+ screen that would make things easier for people.

In the truelife vs. matte issue. Let me just say glossy is brighter and has better colors at the price of glare. I think trulife is a worthy option along with higher resolusion. Matte is your plan old screen like I have. I have a matte WSXGA+ in my 6000 (That's a 15.4). My friend has a Sager NP5720 with a glossy WUXGA screen. Side by side, my screen looks small, dark, sparkly, and down right dull. On a 17inch screen the text doesn't look much different on
the higher resolution than it does on mine. I would
deffinately take high res and glossy on a 17" myself. If you are questioning your choice on the screen. I urge you to go to a mall and visit a Dell kiosk where you can see truelife in person. The WSXGA+ screen is the one on display at both kiosks in my area. It's a great chance to go and check out atleast one kind of Dell screen on the e1705 before you buy.

notebook ftw, honestly... I'd take that regaurdless of screen resolution for that size with that kind of deal, knowing you can't get a different screen size or your paying $3,000+. I've seen WXGA+ on a 17" screen and I wouldn't shoot myself in the face over it... there is still room enough to work thanks to the widescreen. Again go to Bestbuy or CircuitCity and check out the resolutions on the Dv8000t and P100. Know that both of thsoe screens are glossy while yours will be matte on the Precision and don't pay much heed to brightness, just check out the resolusion.

I agree, the WSXGA+ would be a very nice addition. However, I don't have the option for that. I use a 14" Matte screen now, and I think it's just fine. I've been using it for a while and have never had a problem with it. I just don't wanna get something I'm not happy with. Can anyone give me any other ideas as to what I can do?

As other posters have suggested, go find one to look at or order one and take it for a spin. I would make sure the dell guy knows your reservations and get his name and guarantee for no stocking return rights. Sam's now carry certain 1705 Dell books so you may check screens at your local store.

    Cheers!

One thing about the Precision is that even if I did go to the WUXGA, it still wouldn't be a Truelife glossy screen, so at least I can't feel bad about that. The WUXGA is still a matte, just a little more glossy, so am I okay to assume that the biggest thing I will be losing is the resolution? Cause if that's the case, I'll learn to love it as I did my current laptop screen. Why oh why can't they offer a WSXGA on the M90?

I know, I'm trying to make the same decision as you.
    WSXGA would be perfect...

I think I understand you correctly - Check the coupons here at http://www.notebookreview.com/dellCoupon.asp - There are coupons for $750 off or $30% off on the E1705 (30% is better the way you have it spec'd).

    $2700 - 30% (810) = 1890 = $100 less than your PM deal.

Dell charges $149 for the Tru-Brite, so

    $2849 - 30% (855) = 1994 = $20 more than your PM deal.

This will also allow you to change other options, though that looks like a top-of-the line E1705.

    Good luck, HTH.

EDIT: I just tried this and the 30% coupon worked initially, then I changed some things and it is only ringing up for 20%. It is a valid offer. If you are seriously ready to order the system, I recommend calling Dell and seeing if they can fix the order over the phone.

The computer I got was not an E1705, it was a Precision M90. It's a completely different computer, and does not offer those deals. I could have gotten a better specced i9400 for right around the same price, but I like the M90 better. It's already on order and should be here soon. Thanks for the interest though.

I might be wrong, but the cheaper screen is better for games... The reason I say this, is because it is lower resolution. Lower resolution= better game performance at native resolution. At native resolution on my e1705 with a 7900 GS @1440x900 w/ full settings, my computer is at the edge of playable in BF 2. I would not even want to see what higher res would do to fps. All in all though, I do wish I paid more and got the better screen. The screen is ok, but the colors do not look vivid but with a little adjustment in the nvidia color panel it looks better.

I've heard that if you use the XP Powertoys as well, you can get much more vivid colors. I haven't tried it as I haven't gotten my M90 yet. This week. :D
