they are made of plastic, but it's not "cheap" plastic.

People seem assume that if it's plastic it's not as strong or durable as metal. Both the cover on the XPS and the 1705 are cosmetic not structural.....so it's academic really. there have been more advances in Polymer and plastic technology in the last forty years than there have been with metal in the last 100. It's a sign of our times. Plastic lids are cheaper to produce true....but unless you plan on stabbing your lcd lid with a screwdriver both the XPS and the 1705 will stand up as well. Scratchability is another question, but both metal and plastic scratch about as easily depending composition and finish.

I looked at a 1705 and an XPS in a dell kiosk, both laptops where the same age and the XPS cover looked much worse than the 1705......as far as scratches are concerned.

Oh and I should mention that yes the XPS metal lid does look sexy. But both will hold up just about as well in a fall......or another way to put it is this.......just because you have a metal lid on your XPS don't think it will survive a fall any better....the metal might, but the rest of it will not. ;)

    Enjoy

The E1705 lid is made of Magnesium Alloy, not plastic - its the only Inspiron that has a metal lid because it shares the same platform with the XPS M1710 and the Precision M90. If you feel the lid after you leave it off for the night, it feels cool to the touch, also indicating that it is not plastic.

The paint on my E1705's lid is starting to wear on the edges from being carried around everyday in a backpack designed for a 15" laptop. Underneath the paint is shiny metal.

The lid is magnesium alloy. Read xAMDvsIntelx's explanation.

"dell" and "metal" in the same sentence sounds odd... but yeah. mine has some. somewhere.
