No display whatsoever on the laptop's LCD.

When I hook up to an external monitor, I get as far as the Windows Screen, but there are some weird blue boxes in the background (as opposed to a black background) and then...the monitor just goes black (the external monitor that is).

I tried the "last known configuration" option but it yielded the same results.

Next, I tried to start up in Safe Mode. I am in, but now what is the best course of action?

(Also, I tried the diagnostic test on the Dell support website, but I get no beep codes at all).

I'd say 2 things: 1. Video card 2. LCD Display
    In that order.

Thanks. I'm leaning towards the video card myself at this point. That seems logical because even on the external monitor I can only log in under safe mode.

I welcome any opinions on how tricky it is to swap out the video card.
