I'm looking into buying the e1705s1. It comes with a core solo processor. I was hoping that I could buy this base system now, and depending on what happens with merom, either upgrade to a core duo(perhaps after another price drop) or grab a merom. I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be able to use a core duo in this system, but I'm looking for confirmation.

Personally I wouldnt change the cpu on a laptop bc chances are u might mess something up while u are inside it, lol
But if u kno what u doing then do it, plus just get a 1.6 duo or 1 .66 bc think about it 50 bucks more for a cpu that will have more stabibily for a few months until u change it! -
well price comes into play a lot here. If I upgrade the processor, then the old one is basically going to be trash, since no one is really going to want one on ebay either. It would cost me less to get a core solo and upgrade to my real processor later, than to get a t2300 and upgrade it to something else later.

Lots of people ugrade their processors and I know merom will work in an e1705 so if you are comfortable doing that then go for it.

Why get the single core?? Core Duo is only 50 bucks more. And besides, what if Dell doesn't relaese a BIOS upgrade for the Merom? THen you are stuck with a less 'horsepower' single core. Easier to get the Core Duo now for only 50 bucks more than have to pay a heck of a lot more later (even with price drop) and you won't have to do any modding to your precious e1705.

All of the upgrades to Merom are only experiments. Right now, this is an unsupported modification and until Dell states that you upgrade to Merom, it is not 100% absolute that you can put Merom in your system. Yes, I know that several NBF users tried upgrading to Merom, but Merom isn't even released to the public yet, and dell does have BIOS out right now that supposedly is not compatible with Merom. So by a core solo in hopes of upgrading to Merom might not be the safest thing to do considering that nobody knows if dell will allow Merom upgrades in the current systems or not.
You can upgrade to core duo with no problem. This upgrade will not be covered in your warranty though, and there is a possiblity that it might void your warranty (best to talk to dell on that one).
Personally, if you are going to get a laptop, getting core solo is a waiste because it will be worse than getting the lowest core duo. I know price plays into part, but if you get a good core duo, then you that should last you at least a year if not more. By the time you are ready to upgrade to another core duo or to Merom (if it is supported), the prices will be lower. -

Thanks for the suggestions as well as the actual answer I was looking for. After playing around with the coupon codes some more, I finally made my purchase. I got a core duo t2250 on an e1705s3 for 2055 - 750 coupon and free shipping. Final price 1383 with tax. Got the wuxga screen and 7900gs on it. Now I get to wait an extremely long time for it to be delivered. Thanks again though.
