    Hey all,

I don't know how many of you know about this but an easy way to take 4% off your Dell purchase is to choose "pay with credit card," and on the next screen they'll offer to take 4% off if you sign up for/use a Dell preferred account to make the purchase. Saved me ~$65 off my 1520.

DPA has been known to scam customers and charge ridiculous interest rates...if you use that make sure you pay the laptop off very quickly or you'll find yourself paying more than the original price for the laptop.

    There's a thread on this here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=59254

Beware, it's the same as signing up for another credit card which will generally hurt your credit rating to have more cards. You'll have to think if it's worth it in the long run. There's some major caveats to the interest rates they'll charge and how easy it is to pay.

My original plan was to pay it off immediately, as I have the funds, but sign up for the account to receive 4% off, and close the line of credit once it was paid off. Would there be any downsides to this?

BTW, thanks for the quick responses. :)

no downside, except your giving dell all that personal info. their bound to bug you for the rest of your life.

not worth 33$ to me :)

There could be a downside to opening the line of credit and closing it. Once you open it, I'd probably keep it open and not charge anything. At least that is what I have heard before.

I bought my last notebook through Dell small business so I get e-mails and snail mail from them all the time already :).

To be honest, I'm not sure which would impact my score more, having an extra $4,000 on my credit line or opening and closing; I'd imagine having less at this point would probably be better :p.

Well I always do it, I've never had any problems, nor have I ever received junk mail from them...

Just so you know the 4% off is *supposed* to be for new customers only, but I get it with my existing DPA by just asking for it ;)

remember dell DPA is a business. it makes money for them. and guess where their profit comes from? people who pay interest.

if your just going to pay it off, why not get it! its just a company CC

I'd recommend using a different card to pay as most others give you free warranty extensions.

I think this is a good idea as long as you have the funds to pay it off immediately and then close it, or even keep it open. If I were to do it that way then I can save $56 off my entire purchase. So worth it if you are working within a budget and are trying to save money at all costs. I'm for it and in fact I might be doing it, too!

this is a major plus to using another non-dell card. Ive never actually done it, but some card double what warranty you buy. Excellent way for them to make money, and give the consumer piece of mind at the same time.
