Our second D820 arrived tonight and I want the set up to be perfect. Kaspersky recommends that all Windows Service Packs and Updates be downloaded before installing Kaspersky. I can sign onto a secure wireless network, but what's the chance of an attack or virus while I'm downloading the Service Packs from Microsoft.com with anti-virus protection?

    What should I do?

    Please help!

The chance that you are going to be attacked by a virus or intruder while downloading your service packs IS very slim...in fact, it is generally pretty slim for most people.

Go ahead and update your Windows machine.

First, I'd follow Kasperskey's suggestions. And disable Kasperskey when you update in the future. I've had problems right after Windows updates and had to reinstall twice.

Second, if you have a firewall on your router and all you do is connect to Windows Update (no email, no browsing, etc.) you should be fine. My new NB required 45 updates (not counting IE7, which I left off. It took about 30 minutes on DSL.

An alternative would be to download ZoneAlarm and AVG free antivirus, install them, patch your system, then uninstall, and re-install Kasperskey.

My router has a firewall, so I just installed AVG free.

    Hope this helps.

Don't worry about getting attack. Unless you surf Black List site without a firewall on and using IE. Otherwise it's fine when download updates from Microsoft.

This is the first thing I do on new installations - get a firewall, quick, and get an anti-virus program. Then do the rest.

Some experiments have shown that an unpatched newly installed Windows XP system on the open internet is usually infected within 15 minutes.

Worms and viruses don't sleep, unfortunately

unless you're opening some ports or something to invite them...
i used to have my xp unpatched for the whole month without having any pb. the pb is not that serious as if u dont get it today, your system will be destroyed tomorrow.

anyways to ensure the security, dont install anything or go to any website. wait until the windows update is done and turn on the firewall again.
