Is this the end of back-to-school? Most people (students) need their laptops by August end or early Septemeber; which means they need to order them now. So, is this Dell's back-to-school sale? Expect the cheap Vostros (i missed out the $599 deal on Vostro 1400 :( ), nothing else will go on sale anymore, i guess.
I believe the shops will now kick-start their back-to-school. Right?

Fact or fiction: Laptops are cheaper when bought after summer, when demand is lower

depends on what your after... some systems should have more discounts than earlier on in the summer (since they're probably trying to get rid of more stock... at a reasonable price)... but if your after something like the xps m1330 the price isnt going to drop imo

really depends on you, whether your willing to wait and risk not having a good laptop at that point if there arent any good deals.

dell should have some sort of 'sale' but i doubt it will be that much cheaper since they usually lower their specs for sales. if you are buying it from a retailer (bestbuy, futureshop, costcos) you would have alot more luck as there usually are end of the year sales

The best deals aren't advertised sales anyway.

My notebook (in sig) was a coupon that mistakenly stacked with an instant discount for about 12 hours.

I find myself in exactly the same situation. I hate myself for missing this deal. I even saw it, and I thought to myself "I'll buy it tomorrow" and it was gone by then! I had no idea that these deals only last a single day. Argh! I'm holding out for something similar, however. I'm not going down without a fight!

Not the smart value package with some nice default upgrades. It's $699 now.

Vostros are selling like hot cakes. I don't think Dell will slash the prices anymore, maybe not until the end of back-to-school madness.
    I give up any hopes
