What is the general success or issues with installing win xp service pack 3. Is this recommended based on experience or does it create problems.

I'm using XP for the first time in quite a while; I reinstalled XP and updated the system yesterday - no problems or slowdowns. Nothing beneficial that I notice either, though. Of course, I didn't even bother to check what exactly was being updated. lol My gf wanted to use a PC for a while, so she gets this, along with a fresh install of Ubuntu (which I'm hoping she'll at least try).

I'm using a slipstreamed version of XP with SP3. It's generally better to do that, instead of upgrading, which can sometimes cause issues.

SP3 only really has updates to security, most users won't notice any differences when upgrading.

Running perfectly without a complaint, haven't had a single issue with it yet, in particular, the M1530 works very well on XP!

installed it on my 1730, and had problems with constant crashing (particularly when enabling or disabling SLi on nvidia control panel).

reinstalled XP, and left out SP3, everything works fine. Dell Technician has emailed me to report that there "are compatibility problems with XP SP3" as far as the 1730 goes.

Many of the issues have been traced back to machines with AMD processors from certain OEM's. (HP was a big one.) It had to do with how the machines were imaged...specifically using the same image file on Intel and AMD machines.

Here is a post from Tom's hardware about it:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Windows-XP-SP3,5334.html

Of course any individual machine could blow up over anything, but the widespread reports of unbootable machines seems confined to this.

I haven't had any issues. No speed increases.

I believe you have to have IE7 though.

Installed on at least 20 workstations and laptops in the last two weeks and no problems. Only positive results
This is the finished XP OS. It is well worth upgrading XP home to Pro too.
There are no more Windows XP updates, ever...
There will be occasional security updates and others like this, but no OS updates. XP is finally finished and the best Operating System Microsoft has right now.

Even though you may never use the business networking pluses, the many items left out for Home users is well worth the upgrade to Pro.

You will not know what I am talking about unless you know someone in a networking job or large business that programs, or works intimately with pc's/laptops.
Also, Pro offers much greater security issues in who can use your PC and what they can do while logged in.

Enjoy the best Microsoft offers in XP PRO SP3 or leave the insanity behind and boot Linux and become the 'savvy' computer user.

I installed XP SP3 on an M1710 and a desktop with AMD processor (built mostly from spare parts). I can't tell that anything is different.

I don't think it was the AMD processor specifically, so much as it was the OEM image that some manufacturers used with the AMD processor. Apparently there is a particular file that is supposed to be different in the AMD image and the Intel image, and some manufacturers used the Intel image for everything.

That particular issue wouldn't show up on an AMD PC that you built yourself.
