On the customisation page for both models there's a footnote stating that the upgrade is not compatible with PCMCIA cards. I'm not sure why this is the case since the expresscard upgrade isn't free and appears to have more features than a regular PCMCIA slot. Could someone help and tell me what I would be getting if I paid the extra for the expresscard slot?

An expresscard slot is not compatible with PCMCIA cards, no, only with ExpressCard cards. Is that what you're asking?

Indeed I was. Any reason why this is the case?

Reason for this thread is I'm thinking of getting an external sound card for my laptop and some of the connection formats use PCMCIA, I'm not sure if any of the current products utilise the expresscard interface.

The reason is simply that PCMCIA and ExpressCard are completely different technologies. It's like asking why DDR RAM won't work in a computer that uses DDR2 RAM. They're simply different, incompatible, standards.
