What does it look like now? Is it mirroring your current desktop?

Try opening up Display Properties > Settings, and upping the resolution, and then checking the box that says "Extend my desktop onto this display".

Using Fn+F8 controls the active display

how are you connecting it? HDMI or s video

If its HDMI then I would say you are using hardware scaler instead of built in becaue laptop LCD's dont have there own scalers like most desktop counter parts.

I remebered when I had to setup my external display with my desktop. I had to fight with that poorly designed menu for hrs just so I could play WOW on my HD TV.

Keep messing with it your get you way though it eventually.

At this point, you seem to have the desktop split between the two displays, which I think you do not want.

To switch the entire desktop from the internal to the external monitor, you must use the laptop's keyboard. There should be an icon on one of the Function keys that shows two screens. You toggle it until the external monitor gets a signal. Typically, it toggles between internal, external and both.

Of course, that still leaves the problem that the resolutions, and perhaps the aspect ratios, of the internal and external screens are different. I'm not sure about Vista, but in XP, there is a Hardware Profile setting that allows you to manage power settings and resolutions etc, depending on whether a laptop is docked or not. That might help. You could also adjust your video card settings manually.
