    Hey Guys

I got a M1530 coming monday and it is coming with a standard 2gb memory ram.

This is what I have on my desktop.

All I do is download, encode and surf, thats about it.

Is it really worth spending 40-50 pounds on the 4gb memory to max it out.

    Thanks

It would be better as 4GB will be mainstream in a year or so... Plus RAM being as useful as it indeed is, doesn't REALLY cost much anyway, compared to other hardware :)

Probably just see if your machine is as perky as you like. If not, then you can always buy more later at a place like NewEgg which sells memory at a better price anyway. Swapping out the RAM is not hard, and as long as you use common sense you won't hurt anything and will finish in about 60 seconds. At least on my Inspiron, anyway - but I read the directions for the 1530 and they sound very similar.

I'd get the RAM if you think you need it. As Prasad said, it is cheap right now. However, the laptop in my sig only has two gigs and it hasn't been an issue for me really. I'll probably get 4GB eventually, but for now I am fine. Just my .02 cents.

I say save some money and only get one 2GB Dimm. 3GB in Vista32 is a serious jump, at least for me.

I think am right in saying that the majority of the 4th GB will be unavailable to windows due to other hardware requiring parts of the 32bit address space if you are using a 32bit OS.

i.e. the VGA card will use 256mb of the 4GB addressable space taking your max down to 3.75gb. When all other devices are taken into account you'll be lucky to have 3.5gb left most likely less.

    80 bucks for 4gig in the U.S.

Best bang for the buck upgrade IMO.

That is correct, 32bit OS can only address 4GB. It would be around 3.25GB after deducting everything else. But upgrading to 4GB is currently cheap as long as you don't buy it from Dell. Upgrading in a couple of years could be way more expensive when newer technologies replace current ones.

I think the best bang for your buck is to go with 3GB like Gengerald said.

Buy ram now, because in a few years when you need it, it will be much more expensive. Look at the price of DDR memory when it was mainstream, and look at it now.

    hey

I found a place on ebay, that will do 2x2gb ram corsair still in box for £40.00 delivered, Dell wants £40.00 just for one, So Im thinking cant go wrong for that price, really, = $80.00 american/canadian.

So basically for me, getting a 4th gig would be useless.............

Yep. 3GB total is perfect balance of price vs power for most. It will also give you the flexibility to upgrade later to a total of 4GB if you wanted.

Yup 3gb RAM is ideal for Vista x32. Dell doesn't support Vx64 on the m1530 as yet and dunno why. But I've read people have done so.
