The charger for my m1210 is EXTREMELY hot right now, to the point where you cant touch it for more than a few seconds. I doubt its the outlet. Im talking about the actual block in between the computer and the outlet. Is it always really hot?

Depends on what size your powerbrick is. I think with the 1210, you should get a 120W, but it sounds like you got a 90W.
I'm not 100% on that though. Mine gets hot, but not all the time. It normally gets hot when it is buried under something. -
My E1705's charger gets pretty hot. I don't really touch it much, but I can feel it as hot when I move it around and stuff.
I don't really know much about charger heat. I would recommend you call Dell and ask them if it is a problem. Even if they say it isn't a problem, I would say that if it is really hot, you should keep it away from flamable things and off carpeting. I would say placing it on plastic or something would be a good idea since before it can start a fire you'd smell the plastic burning (obviously this is an extreme situation, I'm not saying it will catch fire or anything, but it's best to be safe). I would also say that when no in use (the charger), keep it unplugged.
Out of curiosity, how old is the notebook/charger? -
Yep, the problem arises once again. That's why I really don't like reconmmending Dells. Every Dell notebook seems to have this problem.Even to this day, Dell hasn't resolved this problem yet. I don't want to offend any Dell users but a Dell blew up in a conference meeting in Japan due to the overheating of the battery or adapter, sorry I can't remember which one.
Things you can do:
1.Turn off your PC and let the adapter cool down for a while, you may have had your computer on for too long.
2. Your adapter is not powerful enough for the power the laptop requires. See if you can get Dell to send one with more power or one with more W (watts) if you have a weak adapter right now.
Good luck on resolving this problem. -
Is it plugged into a surge protector / power brick? Or is it a low ventilated area?
Might want to check the wattage on it as SG said. Dell sent me a extra charger with my M1710 that i believe is for a lattitude...so it might possibly be a incorrect charger (maybe..)
I would just give them a call, or talk with them online. Im sure they will send you a replacement one. Depending on your warranty -
^^
The Dell that "blew up" in Japan was using another company's unauthorized battery as a power supply, I believe.
There ARE actual instances of Dells catching fire (with authorized Dell batteries), but they are few and none compared to the enormous number of notebooks Dell sells in one year alone. -
BTW, r u the guy that wants to make his own HDD from 2 very old computers? Good luck with that!
-
What are you doing with the notebook? If you're doing CPU/GPU intensive tasks, your notebook will need more power and therefore more suck power causing the charger to get hot. If it gets so hot that you can't touch it, I would contact Dell and report the problem so they have a record of it.
Juz_Follow_ATI: The Dell notebook in Japan blew up because it was left on the table (which had a fabric tablecloth as well) unventilated. -
Me? Uh...no.
I have no idea what you're talking about. >_> -
I'm just saying that there is a overheating problem that Dell has never resolved yet. Dell's problem.

I had the charge down pretty low, so the battery was charging while I was just surfing the internet and talking on AIM, nothing too intensive.
Its a 65 watt adapter... That seems pretty low compared to what other people are saying. Should I just call and say its not strong enough? -
You should try a 90 wat adapter.
-
Ok, glad to know that I'm not the only one w/ a 65W power brick, but could it also have something to do w/ the fact that I bought my m1210 from Dell Japan?
-
It's very possible. I think oversea people pay more but they get all the best accessory for their hefty prices. Like phones in Japan/Korea.

I suggest getting the slim Kensington 120W power adaptor. Really worth it. I got mine for 30$ on amazon, through their merchants. Normal amazon the adaptor retails at 80$.
Extremely hot charger
