So I just received my m1530 and found 2 defects already:
1) When I opened my lid for the first time, the top bezel around the display (which houses the webcam) already came loose and exposed the camera's workings. It can come apart very easily and does so everytime I open the lid using its designated 2.5" chrome lift-assist thing. Very disappointing.
2) When a disc is inserted in the slot-load, there is an extremely loud buzzing when the disc is spun at high speed. This buzzing "slows down" and decreases in pitch when I press the palm rest/alum brushed area down, so I know it's touching the DVD. The buzzing stops when I attempt to pull apart the opening for the slot-load. When I take the DVD out, there are no visible scratches though...
Anyone else with m1530 running into the same issues?
I'm calling DELL support very soon.![]()

Sounds like it's a bad one, call them and they should just send you a replacement.

Okay, finally got a hold of XPS support, and they're sending a new bezel and optical drive. He's sending me a Panasonic, to replace my Optiarc... The rep stated that his boss told him they're receiving a number of complaints and that they are all loud, but he heard it himself... it should be THAT loud.
Another note, it appears that this only happens at the highest spin, NOT when playing a DVD movie. -
well...shouldn't your dvd drive be running at full speed when decoding a DVD movie? well....count i'm wrong then...^_*

I had the problem with the DVD drive. It was very loud on the spin up and down and by pushing the righ palm rest would change the way it sounded, so it was coming into contact with it.
I called support and let him hear a cd in the drive and he said yes that was too loud and they sent a drive out the next day and the tech called me and installed the new one. Everything works great now.
Tip: clear the whole work area where you will have the tech work. Also provide a few cups or something for him to put the screws in. AND put a towell down so he won't scratch your face plate up while turning it over and over.
They have to dissasemble almost the whole computer to get to the dvd drive.
Its horrifying to watch lol but everything turned out fine in my case
Now this is the best laptop I have ever owned!
Oh and the dvd drive is very quiet. Its a Teac according to my device manager.
Good luck!! -

Just to update, I finally figured out why the bezel was loose. The Display (behind the bezel) was missing 4 screws at the top, which held the display to the actual lid. When I pull up the lid, this was effectively separating the display from the lid (because it wasn't fastened), and forced the bezel to dislodge from the lid. I called XPS Support last last night, talked to someone in the Philippines, and found a package of the screws (and a new bezel, which I didn't need) on my doorstep today!
After screwing in the display, the bezel no longer dislodges! I am now happy.
