I recently purchased an Inspiron 9100 running Windows XP VC: ATI Radeon Mobility 9800 256MB.
I have updated the Bios to A04 (came out October 7th 2004 i think) and the ATI driver (release date: cant remember) via Dell website. When my computer comes out of standby - on some occassions the cooling fan (don't know which fan or even if there are multiple fans) turns on max and the computer slows to a crawl. I assume this is a bug - but I haven't checked CPU temp when it happens. I used to just reboot but then I found on one foruum that hitting "FUNCTION" and "Z" "fixes the problem." It works however I am not satisfied with this fix as I do not know what the shortcut FN+Z actually does... did I just DISABLE MY FAN >< eek!? Can anyone throw me a bone here? Is there a more permanent fix - what does FN+Z do?

I have a service on that seems to be working as the fan is hardly ever on, on a google search look for SpeedFan 409 or all together, if I bring up to give you the URL I loose my entire post, it takes 1.10MB download and monitors your 3 fans by name. Speed Fan allows you to have the numbers in Celcius or Fahrenheit, and if you want you can tell it to start the fan at your type in #, in the download. A dark grey colored fan is placed on your desktop, left click on it to open and agree like the other agreements, and the monitor of your computers heat generated is taken over. BTW you can set the speed of your fan at high or low for it to cool to your # then shut off. [
