on Friday, I received my new Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop. It's my first laptop. So far, I've had no problems (except for one memory parity error blue screen, but that doesn't seem to be anything extremely out of the ordinary in Dell laptops from what I've gathered, unless you get them very frequently).

Anyways, I was wondering if you guys think a temperature/fan monitoring program is really necessary for an Inspiron e1705 laptop, or if you think the bios does a good enough job on its own. If you think another program is needed, which one would you recommend, and what settings?

    Thanks in advance.

i8kfangui. alot of people like to just keep the fans blasting at full tilt all the time, given that it isn't that loud and there's usually enough background noise to drown it out

is there any harm with running fans on high all the time? will it burn them out quickly?

i doubt it, only problem i suppose could happen is that dust builds up more quickly but it's no problem if you do a little spring cleaning every now and then

i8kfangui is really good. bios is a little dumb - lets the video card cook up to 78 degrees and then turns both CPU and GPU fans on low. There is no need for that. In i8kfangui you can definitely do a better job than the bios.

I would not recommend setting fans to high forever though. It's not good for them and they are pretty loud too.

when you open up the program it has settings. "loud fan" is subjective, but like i said there's usualy background noise or my music which even at low settings isn't terribly loud. either way, it's a good program to use to monitor temps and adjust fan speed.

Each persons needs will be differnet, I know that on my e1405 I have full control of all temp controls and sensors. I can monitor CPU, GPU, Chipset, Hard drive, and fan speed stepping. Not all laptops will do this. It is designed for dells but doesnt always work with your particular bios. I have A03 and it allows me to use all fuctions. Download the program and play with it for a few minutes. You will find your settings over time.
