I have a Dell E1505 and I am having some issues with the fan. Here is the story:

So some friends thought it would be funny to use my laptop's fan as ventilation for their gas. So while I was away from my laptop, they constantly farted directly into the fan's intake at the bottom.

This morning they told me something went wrong with my laptop and I found my fan doesn't work anymore.

I need a new fan to replace it ASAP before it overheats.

And also, there is a radiating odor coming from the laptop at all times now. Is there a suggested way to get rid of this odor?

    Thanks!

Just bad luck, I do not see any way scientifically for the gases contained in a fart to break a fan, its just using magnets and an electric current to spin about.

Maybe they did something worse like stuck something in the fan and burned out the motor in some way.

System could be overheated just from them messing with it. You know that the heat pipes in a laptop are gravity dependent right? So if you turn your laptop sideways to do stuff to the bottom vent the cooling pipes wont work. so if they did that for an extended amount of time the system could have fried from over heating.

I called Dell and the person said they do not do replacements for fans without my laptop being under warranty...

    ?

Is there a solution or a quick fix for the smell/odor issue? It is kind of revolting.

Are you thinking of a Thermosyphon? These use gravity, a heatpipe uses a wicking material that will work against gravity. Turn on your temp readouts on, now turn laptop on side...don't block vents!

Friends don't fart on friends laptop..dead friends

Well yeah, no warranty, no free fan....quite simple. But how much would one cost anyway, 20 bucks?

I opened up the laptop and found finger nail clippings or toe nail clippings jammed in the fan...Do you think there is a good way to remove them all?

Say that to the G1S owners that saw there temps climb over 100C by tilting there laptops :D

I guess its safe to say since I know from personal example not all heatpipes work against gravity, the fluid inside is evaporated by the heat, turns into a gas goes up into the heatsink where it cools an becomes a liquid, then the liquid falls down the heatpipe and into the hot area again to repeat the cycle.

    Id pay a professional.

Oh, you meant the clippings not your friends.

Um some tweezers and compressed air would be a good place to start. Especially real compressed air from a compressor with air tool, not the canned stuff it cant do anything.

I doubt that the bad smell is from lingering gas, although that would be hilarious. Check to make sure your laptop didn't overheat and melt any plastic or housing as this may have caused the smell and could continue if the computer was left on with no fan working.

LOL, sorry but that made me laugh quite loudly :)

Seriously though, I can't imagine how farting into the fan would break the fan. I think it was just bad luck, unless the guys were doing something else without telling you.

Interesting! I have dell, hp's, new 1201n, a Gateway(Asus?) and and none of these will overheat by turning them on the side. In any event; do you not think the manufactures should not print a warning in the owners manual?

Maybe the G1S owners have defective heatpipes? Does anyone else's laptop overheat when turned on side? This needs to be addressed so I'm sending a note to Asus to question the safety of my 1201n.

I put my two cents on the fact that I use heat pipes and Peltier coolers to cool our F.O. cans at work :)

    Haha, this made me laugh.

But yeah, some compressed air might do the trick. You could always open her up, take the fan out and clean it that way.
