After reading (studying!) this site for the past few days -- and when the 8600 disappeared -- I decided not to wait for the Inspiron 9300, as it would likely be more expensive, and so bit the bullet and ordered the i6000. This replaces my trusty Sony from the year 2000.
Thanks to all for your help!
