Ok, after a lot of indecision here is what I'm planning to order later tonight. I'll be using it mostly for writing, reviewing photos, photoshop, occasional demos and testing with VMWare. Most heavy PS and VMware work will stay on the desktop machine.

    Vostro 1400

    2GHz C2D
    2GB RAM
    160GB 7200 RPM drive
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini-card
14.1 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Display with TrueLife™
    8X CD/DVD Burner w/ double-layer DVD+R write capability
    128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS
Integrated 2.0 mega pixel Web Camera
Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

3Yr Ltd Warranty and Next Business Day On-Site Svc
Gold Technical Support, Vostro, 3 Years

    Price before tax: $1,516.00

How's that look? The only thing I'm worried about is the weight, but I don't think I will notice after awhile. It will be my first non-work laptop so I don't have anything thing to compare it to anyway.

Is there anything I should add? Is the remote worth $60 (work with powerpoint)? I'm not planning on ordering a case, but are the ones on the dell website worth the money?

    Thanks.

    yikes, seems pretty expensive

as for remote, dont order that, its pretty useless and takes up the expresscard slot

do you have a super fast internet connection? or do you plan to wirelessly transfer alot of files? if no to both, just stick with the cheapest WLAN card

The system is closer to $2000 with the same config without using the promotion on the Dell website. How can I get it to be less? The upgraded wireless from the Intel A/B/G was $30, but since I plan on having this machine for a long time figured it was worth it.

hm certain things you can consider, upgrade the RAM and HD yourself, both are very easy upgrades and can be done within 10 minutes.
2gb of RAM if you upgrade yourself would cost 50-70 and minus 20-30 if you sell the 1gb stock ram

160gb 7200rpm HD is about $160 now, and you can sell the 120gb stock for 60-80

takes you 10 min to upgrade, and probalby 10 min to set up the ebay page to sell
