    Hi,
Is it possible to check what kind of screen we get (SEC, LG, AUO) before we physically receive the laptop? Is there like a serial number online from our orders that shows the type of screen? THANKS!

I looked into this for you. Looks like you need the Service Code to get as specific as component brands.

Hopefully someone with a bit more insight will chime in soon.

    Regards,

The short answer is no. But you can always request it if you call in to a CSR, however it's not guaranteed that you'll get what you requested.

Edit: Bah, I read the post wrong. I thought you wanted to know if you can choose which screen to get, not just to know what screen you are going to get. Back to hooked on phonics for me.

yes actually you can, just go to your order status page and then click on your order number. once there, you should see like 3 blue links on the left hand side, one says like "return this order" or something like that and the link in the middle should say invoices. go to invoices and it should show your receipt with your computer's info on it, scroll down to the bottom of the list of parts and there should be a service tag on it.

go back to the order status page and at the top click my systems & peripherals. put in the service tag you found in the box that says service tag and click add, then it should update it and show your computer, click the service tag link and it should take you to the config of your laptop.

    :)

I am not sure how accurate that info is... while it lists my AUO screen panel properly, for the service tag that I have that is an SEC it lists LGP which I thought was the part number for LG screens....

WR362 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 14.1WXGA, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., LGP, TLF
Is actually an SEC screen - shows as such in device manager and it has noticeable grain.

PU891 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 14.1WXGA, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., AU OPTRONICS CORP, TLF
    AUO display

Anyone with an LG want to chime in on their part number for comparison?

interesting, i have the part number but mine is the 1520 and 15.4 inch, the part number is XP059 and it says LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 15.4WXGA+, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., TLF, LGP

and yea i think the dell canada site is setup differently than the us one, if you were sent like a receipt or something lately it might have the tag on that

edit: hm yea i just checked the date that i recieved the invoice receipt and it is
Receipt Date: 09/14/07, which is the day my laptop was shipped. for looking up your service tag you're using the invoice which was sent out the day that laptop with the sec was shipped right? just curious

not sure...for the most part in reading up on the problems the grainyness is mostly with samsung/sec and auo while the lg's main problem is some backlight bleeding

Yeah I used the exact method you outlined above of looking up the service tag on dells website and such, also I have physically had both laptops in my hands and verified the service tags that way.

So I am pretty sure my info is accurate.

Now that I think about it, I don't think I got an invoice with my 1400 when it first arrived... so I don't have a paper receipt to comare it against...

Would be interesting to have people start posting what their part numbers are vs what they really got for 1400 and 1500's... doesn't seem there should be any wiggle room when it says LGP but it's always possible that they write down whatever the computer shows they have stock of but the workers really just grab whatevers on the top of the pile at the moment.

That makes more sense to me actually becuase if the workers really did get the exact part listed on the invoice it would seem there should be someway to request that part at least through escalations and so far as I can tell there is not.

This would be pretty interesting to find out the process that dell selects which manufacturer they use each time. I always thought that the screen was selected first then the worker scanned a barcode on it or something and that updated the info on your order with the screen that was selected, so the part labels were made after the parts were selected rather than before, but it does seem to be pretty confusing lol.

i'll give an update to mine on monday whether the screen was actually an lg. i saw in another thread a day or two ago where someone was saying something like this in that dell said they had an auo but when they looked in their devices they actually had an sec. o well i guess i'll just have to hope for the best :D

edit: also on the note of requesting screens, some people were saying that if they had in-home service and they needed the screen replaced, they were able to convince dell to send them out a specific screen by calling up the technical support or something like that, but others have said it was impossible so i dont know what to think about that.

I have one arriving monday also and it's listed as LG (same as my SEC on was listed) so I will be checking it for sure. I actually requested the CSR put a note on the order for the replacement that it be an LG but he told me there was nothing he could do and that it wouldn't make a difference.

I am not sure how the on site service issue works... it may be possible that the repair locations actually stock screens and are in the US and so can choose better than the fabs in Asia can but that's just a guess.

I would like to see more reports on success with that method before really drawing conclusions on it though...

Interesting, I just went back to check my device manager and it now reads LPL000...

I am not crazy and I am perfectly sure it read SEC when I first got it (I made sure to check it many times) and I can only think this may have something to do with building out this windows install on my other 1400 and swapping the drive into this one...

    Or I am smoking crack...

Either way it's grainy but it may in fact be an LG panel... short of opening it up (not interested at this point since there is a replacement on the way and it's grainy anyway) I can't figure any other way to tell.

All I know is that I am sure it read SEC at one point...

lol the plot thickens, this seems too weird :p

that sucks though if it is an lg that its grainy, guess dell has messed up screens in every res and manufacturer :(
