    Finger print reader...
some people having problem with it.this is how it work,,,
you see that the scanner is deeper than the surface of the laptop so what you need to do is make your finger go all the way down and touch that little glass sacnner as you move your finger backward... you must feel it with your finger...
when I first got my XPS 1530 I had the same problems,... tried everything dry, wet, fast . slow........ but the way I told you will work... just press your finger down on the little scanner.... let me know..

There is also a tutorial from within the software itself.

I realize there is a tutorial, but my teenage daughter (a senior in high school) has problems with the fingerprint being recognized. She has never gotten a good one.

My teenage son did it right three times in a row. Evidently my daughter's hands are too small to be easily read by the scanner. Any suggestions?

    Have a great evening, Brad

I don't think it's a matter of hands being too small or large, for whatever reason, the reader isn't able to see her finger.

Does she have dry skin? Tell her to try licking her fingertip (lightly) or touching her forehead first (foreheads are usually oily....a little oil should help).

It took me a good while to get the hang of the fingerprint reader, but once you figure out, it's quite good.

As the OP said, you may need to intentionally "dip your finger down a bit" as you swipe.

I had problem at first but after a while, I figured out You really need to apply a little pressure to get it to work and make sure you slide your finger slow and steady across it. Your finger will start to curve a bit as you apply pressure and drag it in order to get it down and in contact with the reader.

Yeah, at first, I got 0/60 tries right, they were all labeled "bad quality"
but then I started getting the hang of it.

It's all about surface area contact, speed, and straightness. :p
Try using your thumb at first if you can't get the smaller fingers to work
