I have a new Studio 15 with firewire port. I just purchased a new camcorder to transfer DV tapes to DVD. I got the camera specifically because it was supported by vista. But the laptop doesnt recognize the camera. Ive done a good bit of research and it seems to be a vista problem. Ive tried all the solutions i could find on the net. Even modifying the registry per the instruction from microsoft support.

Ive varied the order of turning on the camera, camcorder and when to plug in the cable. Still its not recognized. Anyone with the same problem and any suggestions on a solution. Im installing a firewire card on my dell desktop thats running xp to hopefully eliminate camera/cable issues.

Just a shot in the dark here, but do you have the camera in playback mode? Some cameras won't even operate the firewire port in anything but playback mode.

One problem some people run into is the plug not going in the socket properly and find trimming off a little bit of the excess plastic on the cable end allows the jack to make proper contact with the port. If the port appears to be working fine in DM then that could be your problem - the 1394 jack is not going into the socket far enough to make proper contact.

Plug seems to be fully inserted. Additional searching for the answer to the problem has shown me it seems to be a very common problem. Seems to be a Vista issue. Camcorders/cable combos are working fine on XP compurters and then are failed to be recognized by Vista. I dont think the answer will come till Microsoft solves it. Im not holding my breath.

Well its definately Vista. Just installed the firewire PCI card in my older dell desktop running XP. Attached the camera and it recognized it immediately. Windows movie maker popped up and i had transfered a video clip in seconds.
