I am new to firewire and would like to know what type of connector I need to connect to my Vostro 1500.

    Connecting what to what?

Usually a FW cable is included with the peripheral.

    This picture
    http://www.notebookreview.com/picture.asp?f=25365

is from the Vostro 1400 review
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3873

but I think it's the same type of connector as the 1500.
The firewire connection is to the right of the vents.

It looks to me like it takes a 4-pin connector. It certainly isn't a 6-pin.
The wiki has more pictures of the different connectors.

Maybe someone with a Vostro who is using their firewire could tell you.

I have an external harddrive with a 6-pin connection and the cable is 6-pin to 6-pin. This obviously won't work with the laptop. I just needed to know what type of connection the laptop takes.

    Aha! I found this
    Vostro link
It says it has a "4-pin IEEE 1394 port."

If it is a 4-pin firewire port that is available on the laptop then you can use a 6-pin to 4-pin adapter to connect your harddisk to your laptop....

Yeah. I'm going to be calling some local computer stores about that later this week. If I can't find one that way I'll order one, but I have a hard time paying $6-7 for a $2.25 piece of plastic and metal. :p

Heh. In town this small, there is no such thing. I'd have to drive at least one hour for a spare parts shop. It looks like I'm going to get a good deal through ebay for a retractable cord with adapters though. That'll be nice.
