A friend as died and in his will, he left me a Dell Inspiron 1300, anyway everything seems to be working well, I have purchased some memory and put it up to 2 gig, and have also purchased a new battery and a plug from wall to laptop, have downloaded pdf guide to laptop.
My question is this, after 6/7 hours of charging, my charging light suddenly is a flashing orange light, I presume meaning the battery is fully charged, would this be safe to leave on or should I remove from power outlet straight away, probably seems a novice type question, but I am aufait with desktop computers permanently plugged in, but this is my first laptop (only had it for 3 weeks) Your advice would be most helpful.![]()

A flashing orange battery light generally means there is a problem with the battery.

Yeah, if it the led flashes five times....1st-4th times amber and the 5th time green. Then the battery has come to the end of its life and needs replacing.
The same happened me with my inspiron 8500.
The battery will still be ok to leave in the machine, as mine still is 2yrs later. This solution is fine if you don't intend to do ANY mobile computing.
However, should you take it away from the desktop (and charger) then you will just get about 10-15min charge.
So, if you want to go mobile with it, but a new battery. If not, don't waste your money. -
Cheers for the input. Have been in touch with the company I purchased the item from, they tell me that some circuitry (it's not a DELL battery but a Panasonic) give a different signal than the DEll, and a flashing orange light .....means very full!!, anyway they was both the same price and I needed a new battery, and some the sites was over £75.00 + VAT, so was persuaded to go the alternate route.
This flashing orange light happened on the first day 25th March 2008, and I was a bit concerned, so turned power off, and booted on battery power and got a full 100%, and with constant use + wifi and streaming a play from BBC7 whilst searching WWW, I got 3 hours 20mins until I got the very low warning to save & exit.
Since finding this forum I think I've become a bit more laptop savvie, but the different circuitry idea is a difficult thing to swallow, but getting 3+ hours is good, so it makes it difficult to pack up and return.
Flashing orange light!!!
