Call up dell and request a replacement! I did and explained the rep about the problem. It didn't take too long for her to understand, I just said a few key words and she knew about the problem immediately. Using key words such as "grainy, sand-like effect or even unclear whites" can help your cause.
I think they know this is a widespread problem because at the end her manager/supervisor specifically went out of his way to talk to me about the experience. He said that the first batch of laptops my have this problem. He also said he will guarantee that the next one will be not be grainy because they can put specific criteria to the replacement model and will have a thorough inspection that this one won't have the same problem as the last.
So yeah I'm getting a new laptop with a guarantee "no grainyness effect" within 7 business day and next business day shipping. I just checked my order status and I ordered 7/24 and will have it by 8/1.
This laptop I ordered 6/29 btw and recieved 7/13.

LOL..think again.. i was "guaranteed" a perfect laptop for my replacement and it had the same issue as the original lol..tested...LOL...dell? test?

Um wow, way to be specific there buddy. What exactly was the problem with yours and why did it have the same issue.
Nonetheless isn't anybody happy that dell is actually replacing these and in a timely manner to boot? Because I am
Watch, I bet you there is going to more posts hating on dell, that says "Well they shouldn't even have grainy screens in the first place and blah blah blah, yadda yadda, yadda." For the value and money you guys are expecting way too much for the laptop to be perfect. At least dell is attempting to fix their problems, I heard the new batch of 1520's don't have problems like the first release batches do.
Seriously, I would not give up my Inspiron for any other laptop because it has superior cooling, an amazing keyboard, less bloatware than it's competitors(with a clean vista reinstall cd). That's worth it right there. -

I Just Reacived My Dell 1520 Today Oct 29th 2007,the Model Number On My Screen On My Laptop Is Lpldf00, Wxga+,i Went Into The Device Manager And Found The Model Number, being A Brand New Laptop Still Had Grainyness On The Whites, and Grey, and Others,i Did Contact Dell Tech Support ,boy I Wasted Another 2 Hours On This, before This Laptop I Bought A Referbished Vostro 1500 With The Wxga+ Screen That Was Also Grainy Or Sparkly,it Was A Auo Corp, screen, tech Came To My Place Because I Bought The Extended Warrenty, well It Got Replaced ,same Problem, the Tech Also Brought Out A Auo Corp Screen,i Was Not Very Happy About This Problem,i Sent It Back Too Dell Orderd A Brand New Inspiron 1520,with The Same Screen Wxga+ Hopeing This Fix The Problem, nope Dell Still Has Problems With There Monitors On The Laptops,i Might Send This New 1520 Back Too Dell ,try A Differnt Company, When I Called Tech Support The Told Me They Will Adress The Problem In The Near Future, what A Joke,i Have Been Reading The Forams Alot Of Peaple Complaing About Grainy Screens, when I Talked To The Tech ,he First He Told Me He Has Never Herd Of The Problem,i Asked To Speak With A Manager Or I Will Be Sending My 1520 Back Too Dell

One More Comment That I Told The Tech Support Was Why Dose The Referbished Laptops Tell A Person What Screen The Laptop Has Brfore It Ships It Tells You In The Invoice, and On The Brand New Laptops ,it Will Not Tell A Person Which Screen It Has On The Invoice,it Only Says True Life Wxga+ 1440x900,so A Person Can Not Even Tell Which Screen You Have On The Laptop,i Think A Person Should Know This Information, this Is My Own Opinion That Dell Does Not Want Customers To Know Which Screen A Person Will Get

And as for the newer batch of 1520's not having the same issues.. I don't know. As of Oct this year Dell has already admitted in an internal powerpoint doc that the headphone static is due to a flaw in the MB design.. and admitted their is no resolution to that yet and a MB replacement does not fix that. So if they fixed it ... it must have been really recently. But that means they would have to do a redesign and remapping of the MB layout. I doubt seriously that has happened.
But I do agree that Dell has better CSR support, and sends out hard copies of restore DVD's and anytime upgrade disc. HP in my view has better hardware. I would like to have both good support and hardware but if I have to choose between the two, I'll take better hardware any time of the week. -

He apparently typed his whole message with caps lock on...
Anyways, I'm glad you were able to get your screen replaced. Now I just gotta pray that my 1520 doesn't arrive w/ a grainy screen =( -
For those that have a grainy screen and cannot live with it.
