Ok. So I dropped my laptop on it's side while my headphones where in the audio port, the laptop landed on the headphone jack part causing it to cave in. Now my laptop thinks there are headphones plugged in even though there isn't.
Im wondering if there is a way i can bypass this and force my laptop to play audio through the on-board speakers?
I tried disabling the headphones via the control panel but still no audio came through the on-board speakers.
    Im on vista.

    i appreciate any help.

I would guess that you've mangled the jack internals and the short circuiting that normally occurs only when you plug the headphones in is now permanent. You could take the chassis apart and investigate the jack assembly and see if a) you could fix it and b) at least remove the short that makes the lappy think the headphones are plugged in.

Also I'd give tech support a call - if it's anything like the audio board on my Vostro 1700 there's no components on it really - it just provides electrical pathways and is only tiny so cost of replacement shouldn't be that steep.

You can most likely replace the jack assembly itself if you can find it on ebay or buy it from Dell.

Im not looking to fix it. The jack is completely gone, it snapped right out and disappeared into the inners of my laptop.
Im going to get a new laptop in a couple of months, i was just wondering if there is a way i can force my laptop to use the speakers.

Just to be clear, where the audio-in port used to be there is now just a hole. Thanks for the help anyway.

In that case, you would need to replace the entire system board since the headphone/mic jacks are soldered directly onto the board....there is no quick fix.
