Hello everyone,
1. Can I use another CD of Windows XP to do a fresh install of XP on my DELL Inspiron? Or only the OEM CD will work with my Laptop?
2. Also, Can I do a fresh install of Windows 98 then Inside windows 98, Run the upgrade / installation of WindowsXP?
I do not have the Windows XP reinstallation CD with me and because my sister just got home here in the Philippines together with the laptop so I do not have any options of getting the Windows XP cd from DELL.
Ty in advance!

Hi boom,
1.) yes you can as long as you have the key to that CD. The key located on the laptops is made to function with OEM discs.
2.) I know you can upgrade from 98 to XP, but I'm not sure exactly what you are talking about. If you have an upgrade disc, then yes you can.

Thanks for the quick reply. What I am asking about my question on windows 98 is that can I install Windows 98 on my laptop. Then after the installation finishes, upgrade the windows 98 to Windows XP.
Secondly, My windows XP is a retail from another computer. Can I use the CD key on my laptop to the Windows XP retail? and Will my I6000 accept fresh retail installation of Windows XP?
Thank you so much SG for the quick reply, I am here about to reformat my laptop and I am very confused since I do not have the OEM CD of windows XP bundled with my Laptop. -
Yes, you should be able to do to the upgrade to XP. I know the 98 can be upgraded if it meets the requirements. You can find out more on the upgrade here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/default.mspx
As for the disc problem, if the disc is a retail disc, then it should work. My concern is that most discs that come with the computer will not work on other brands (meaning you can take a disc that you got with HP and use it on a dell).
You'll have to use whatever key came with that disc. The key that is on your laptop only matches the OEM discs from Dell, so even if you have a full version of XP on a retail disc, the key on your laptop will not validate XP. Most manufacturers make it where the key on the laptop must match the XP disc that comes from that manufacturer. -
