Why do people do this when they get new laptops? Isn't Add / Remove Programmes good enough?

No, it isn't. If you just remove around a half a dozen trial programs off your computer, then your system registry will be littered with rubbish that is utterly useless, making your computer slower. You may have to defragment your hard drive, use a registry cleaning tool. And when the laptop comes, maybe Windows XP is installed with some tools and features that are useless to you.

So, it is simply easier to re-format the hard drive and install the operating system exaclty to your liking. It also gives structure in the files. So all the system files, program files and system registries are exactly where you want them to be, with no uncessary files about your hard drive. And sometimes, it is quicker to simply format the HD than defragging, uninstalling and so on.
