I just ordered a Vostro 1400 yesterday with the following specs:
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5470 (1.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic
14.1 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Display
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
    80G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
    128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS
    Dell Wireless 1490 802.11a/g Wi-Fi Mini Card
Integrated 2.0 mega pixel Web Camera
    Integrated High Definition Audio
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Jus this morning, my friend showed me the E1505 coupon, which lets me get pretty much the same specs besides the Camera.

    Here are the E1505 specs:
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5300 (2MB Cache/1.73GHz/533MHz FSB)
    Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium
    15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen SXGA+ Display with TrueLife™
    256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory™
Size: 120GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
    8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
    Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N
    Integrated Audio
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

I am really freaking out right now for some reason and want to know which one would be the better deal. Please help!

    Thanks

    - Chrono

Stick with the 1400 ( I have one). The screen size and weight are just right. One thing I would change would be the CD/DVD drive. Get the DVD+/- RW. BTW...when you get your 1400 you won't get the install disck for the OS system. You'll just need to request it and you might get lucky and get Home Premium.

Ok the 1505 have significantly worse video card and half the memory... Also its a much larger system (14.1 to 15.4 is quite a big difference in portability). What will you be doing on the system? Do you game? Will this get carried around? What are the prices... People really need more information to give you good responses.

1400 has 800Mhz FSB faster RAM, twice as much RAM, better GPU
1505 little faster CPU bigger HDD, DVD burner.
    it's a tie!

Sorry about that..first time user around here.

The price for the Vostro is around $779 shipped (US dollars) and the E1505 would be around $790 shipped.

I will be carrying around the laptop around everywhere (to class, friends houses, etc.)

It's going to be used mostly for watching movies and listening to music. There will be some gaming, but nothing too hardcore.

I would get the DVD RW drive and put as little memory as possible and by aftermarket memory. It is really easy to install on the 1400

In order to switch to the DVD RW combo, would I have to call in because it wasn't on the config page where I could change my stuff?

After reading these posts, I think I'm going to stay with my 1400. Thanks everyone!

why would the x1400 be better? i haven't seen any benchmarks for the two but in general a 8600=x2600, 7600=x1600, and 8600>x1600, so i think its safe to assume 8400=x2400, and x2400>x1400

Well the Vostro 1400 is definitely more portable if you want to be taking the laptop everywhere. A little bit of weight and smaller size can make a big difference on something you carry for hours a day. Also it is likely to be more durable than the 1505 design. If you are going to be near an AC outlet often, you can think about getting the 6 cell battery as well.

If the X1400 had its own memory, maybe. However in the 1505 its using shared system RAM which makes it close to worthless for many gaming apps. There just is not enough overall bandwidth on system RAM to keep the framerates up when you start upping the details and resolution.

Discreet memory > shared system memory for games. Unless you want to play games in 800x600 with details turned down...

The video card memory is NOT shared.

    256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory™ > 128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS

I am not trying to say the E1505 is better then the Vortos 1400, just saying the video card is better. I would personally get the vortos 1400 :)
