    1. Take the Recovery DVD.
    2. Pop it in your optical drive.
    3. Restart the computer.
    4. Boot from the DVD (if the computer boots up normally, change the BIOS so that your optical drive will be the first in the boot order).
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
    6. Install Vista.
    7. Install any drivers (use the driver cd if one if provided).
    8. DONE!

I haven't re-install a Vista yet but if it like XP setup, you will be given a choice to reformat/partition your HDD during OS setup.

has anyone considered formatting and doing a fresh install of Windows XP?! because from what it sounds like -- vista uses up WAY too many resources.

The hardest part about for some people is hunting down all of the drivers for XP.

Why does Dell ship the 1520 with 4 partitions?

Some people have problems with Bluetooth, fingerprint scanners, webcams, trackpads, etc. He never mentioned which dell he had so I could not tell him which drivers would need searching for.

Can I reiterate farelli's question, not having one of the new Dells here - why does Vista take up all 4 primary partitions? One for the Dell Media thingy... what else?

And also: why is a reinstallation of Vista recommended when you get your new machine (bloatware or what...?)? And if I wanted to dual-boot XP and Vista... how, when all the primary partitions are used? In other words, could I reinstall Vista on less than 3/4 partitions to make room for XP too...?

If we just want to run XP -- are there drivers available for sound and video?

also, do you all recommend that we delete Dell's partitions and merge everything into one?
