First off, I'm fortunate to have recieved my laptop in 13 days. For you all still waiting, hang on -- it really is worth it! I'm an incoming college freshman and this is my first ever notebook. After nights of research, I am confident to know that I got the most bang for my buck. Specs and order status are in my sig.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The inspiron line is well built, semi-portable, and definitely pleasant to look at. It is not as light as I hoped it would be, but for its weight it makes up in durability. Just by holding it you know you have a sturdy laptop in your hands.
PROS
- Windows Vista is beautiful
- No grainy screen
- No buzzing sounds. Really quiet actually!
- The speakers are loud, clear and crisp. Take note, I'm not an audiophile so my standards are slightly lower.
- Battery life is as advertised. I got about 2 hours and 50 minutes for a 6-cell battery
- The hinge is easy to open. It's like a magnet, not those kinds where you use both fingers to slide a scroll like sctructure
- Keyboard just needs the right pressure to work, but the layout may take time to learn. It's kind of cramped, specially on the right side.
- SD card slot works flawlessly, so does the express card slot. Easy to put stuff in, and take stuff out.
CONS
- I'm disappointed that Aero Glass does not work when a window is maximized.
- There is only one switch for both WiFi & Bluetooth.
- I have dead pixel on my screen, but it's not a big deal. I have Dell Care Plus so I can just ask them to replace it when I have real issues.
- Laptop gets pretty hot at the bottom; Its bareable, but will be uncomfortable if placed on the lap for more than two hours.

-
man i wanted white i love that in white
-
Congrats!
I ordered the same specs except the warranty and got a 1440x900 TL Glossy in white for my brother and I ordered it 8/5 and has yet to ship. ESD is tomorrow though, but it's still interesting that you got yours first. What type of creen did you get? Also, is there a model or part number on your packing list for the bluetooth module? I'm think of adding it later. Thanks. -
my friend has the black one, i like the feel of it but the white is just completely different. i like the glossy finish (its kinda like plastic...) its very very shiny
when i showed my sister my new laptop, she's like "is that an apple?"
anyway, I got the anti-glare screen. Yeh, the colors are not as vivid as I'd hope them to be, but I'd rather have that than a screen I cant see most of the time. It really is ANTI-GLARE. I've already tested it in very bright locations and I can still see the screen.
Orion, my bluetooth is internal so I dont know how you're gonna add it later without taking apart the computer. the item number is 430-2348. its called Dell Wirless 355 Bluetooth Mod. -
the bluetooth simply plugs in after removing the keyboard cover.. very easy
-
does it ship with protective film on the coveR?
-
Thanks! There's a thread on about the bluetooth and you can buy it new for $19 or referb for $11. I wanted to make sure the part # before I ordered.
-
no, there is no protective film on the whole cover. there is a soft plastic one over the Dell logo though...like the ones over new phones or cameras screens when you buy them.
-
this makes me regret getting my vostro 1400... vostro looks ugly compared to this ...T,T
-
Nice pictures and review, by the way I have the same phone except it's black
-
your laptop is absolutely BALLER!
i would get white if the wait wasn't long. -
OMFG that was what i wanted lol but i just went for a vostro because it was cheaper and its basically the same -__- i regret now after seeing how nice it looks lol
-
but your computer costs half as much. i think its a fair tradeoff! -
bump for the fresh alpine finish on a fellow 1420.
got me a jet black 1420 myself along with two dead pixels that i only noticed after a week of owning the machine. no biggie tho. -
-
Nice looking system.
Just so you know Aero never works in full screen. When you are in full screen the intent is to hide the background. So not really a Con of the system so much as Vista. -
