Now, I want something portable ...
But I also want it to run games nicely.

If you own an XPS m1210 and you're a gamer, post your thoughts. Is it powerful enough to satisfy, or should I take something an inch larger, a pound heavier but with nicer graphics/fps/what-not.

Heh. Would graphic-heavy games like Oblivion be out of the question?

if you have the 7400, you can still run oblivion but you gotta turn down the settings

anyway, you really shouldn't be gaming on 12 inch, hard to game at that size

    15.4 is still pretty portable

I can game alright on my 1210. I run Oblivion at 1280x800, with low-medium custom settings. Some things off some things on. HDR and Bloom are out of the question though, that game is a hog. But it definitly playable and it looks ok. Just turn grass off and you can have the view distances and distant buildings on and still have good frame rates. HL2 is another thing though. Completly top that game out easily on my 1210, it really runs beautifully. All and all the 1210 is good for a casual gamer, if your hardcore and want portability its not for you. A better notebook for that would be the Alienware Area-51 m5550. Its a really nice 15.4" with a core 2, 1920x1280 screen, and a 7600 which is about twice as powerful as the 7400 in the 1210. If this existed when I bought my 1210 I would have likley gotten this notebook instead just because of the better graphics.

Considering the alternative of having either a larger laptop or intel xtremecrap graphics I'm very pleased..

Don't use AA and most games run great. Anything older than a year or so plays extremely well, HL2, etc... The mmorpg's are a little laggy and some settings have to be turned down but really it's great for the size.

I'm considering adding a m1710 to the stable to handle mobile gaming/lan parties and replace my second system at home (desktop)

I run WOW and it is fine. BF2 is a little choppy at times
