So I've looked through the posts and can't seem to find it anywhere although I'm sure it's around. But could some one tell me how to identify if the 8600m GT I receive with my new lappie is GDDR3 or GDDR2. Thanx in advance for any help with this.

The latter.
Only the MBP, G1s and G2s has the GDDR3 currently. -
Really not a chance huh? Because a dell tech person said it would be GDDR3 but I had a feeling he might not even know. Oh and could you tell me where i can find a 3dmark test thats safe and free.

how does one check? riva tuner says otherwise >.>

It doesn't matter if Dell's website says it is. IT IS NOT GDDR3. Seriously, can we make a sticky or something? Listen to cori.

I'm not saying it is or isn't I just want to know how to check mine personally. Even if you beleive it's GDDR2 or GDDR3 could someone please tell me if there is a way to check from the numbers on it or something.

Ok, rivatuner is not accurate for notebooks.
The card is not GDDR3, the clock speeds tell us that the memory bandwidth is the same as the GDDR2 version and the Dell site doesn't say the ram type on the 256MB version that are in the Inspirons.
As for 3DMark06, just go to Futuremark.com and download the trial there, that is all that is needed. -
It's DDR2, but you can overclock easily to DDR3 speeds (I got 3900 in 3dM06 1280x1024)
-
You're 270Mhz shy of the GDDR3's stock speed.
-
My system hung in about 3 seconds when I clocked it at 625/550

Rivatuner will say its DDR3, since it's not been updated to reflect the 8600GT in notebooks. What you want to check is the clock speed, the DDR2 is 400mhz and the GDDR3 is 700mhz.
It's been repeated over and over again, there are about a hundred threads on thisThough it'd be nice to have GDDR3, I guess the premium for it was not what Dell opted for. Dell made a mistake of saying it was GDDR3 a few weeks after release but quickly corrected themselves. At least Dell US did, cause alot of customers were trying to get freebies for them being 'misinformed'.

It is definitely DDR2. I disassembled my machine and took a close look at the card. It has eight Hynix HY5PS561621A FP-25 chips, and according to this PDF these are DDR2 256 Megabit 2.5NS (400mhz) rated memory chips. Because there are eight bits in a byte, it is a 256MB video card. This should put to rest the guys who are saying it has 512MB too.
GDDR3 or GDDR2 on 8600m GT?
