Hi guys. I got my E1705 about a week ago and everything until 3 days ago was running fine. First my Sony DVD-Rw drive was going bad. And i heard from many people that the sony drive is faulty. So, got got dell to ship me the nec drive. Its working now. NOW, my 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 GPU fan sometimes makes this rattling metal sound(not while playing games, but doing normal desktop work). Its not a 24/7 thing, and its not loud(it sounds like its hitting a little loose piece of metal), but when I got the laptop and had it for a week, that noise was not there. Also, my hard drive once in a while, makes this loud clicking sounds. So, all this conserns me because I paid good money. And I want everything to work fine. My question is, does anybody have this problem with their E1705/9400 Video Card fan? Is this normal?? Thanks.

I haven't noticed any rattles or anything. I'm curious, and not to get off topic here, what do you mean your drive was 'going bad'? PM me if you'd rather not throw us off topic.

    Thx!

I have the loud clicking noises too sometimes. I don't like it, but I live with it. There isn't any metal around the fan. Maybe it's the fan going bad. It could possibly be the wires to the fan. A picture of the fan.

Do you think its the video card fan? or the computer fan on the side? The noise drives me crazy. When the noise is gone, the pc is so nice and quiet. I at first thought it was the harddrive, but it was not after running the diagnostics test on the fans. So, it is either the video or the processor fan. But its coming from the back right part of my E1705. BY THE WAY, where did you get the picture? I would like to look a bigger version of it.

LOL, guess i should read your post completely and I would have seen that.

That is the fan for your video card. I wonder if its not possibly a loose screw. I haven't taken my base apart yet, so I'm not sure how the video card fits in relation to the fan, but the fan might have a loose screw or possibly the video card assembly.

If you want the manual for the 9400: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9400/en/sm/index.htm

Under system components, you'll see a diagram of all of your laptop parts.

thanks a lot SouthernGirl. I was looking for that page on dell site, but could not find it. I also think its the video card fan. I dont want to open my laptop cause i think it will void the warranty. So, i called dell, and they will replace my video card. If, the problem continues after the video card is replaced, then for sure the problem is the fan next to the card(i dont know if theres only one fan or two there). Its good that i got the 2 year warranty. Again, thanks.

    Sounds good.

You can open the case without voiding your warranty. You just have to be careful, but it won't void your warranty. Alot of us open our cases up (i need to) because of the fans. My fan areas have alot of dirt and dust.

Hi guys. the video card does not have a fan. The fan it uses is the pc fan wich is next to it. So, if the fan is making a noise, it is the laptop fan, not the video card cause the card has no fan.

What are the specs of your comp? If it has a dedicated card the can should be on the back right side. I have the I9300 and it is the same kind of build.

Do you have the GMA 900?

That is the graphics card fan. The cpu fan is on the other side of the computer. Quoting myself........ :)

This is true...but this is still considered the GPU fan due to the fact that it mostly cools the GPU or the thermal cooling unit. So most people will still call it the GPU fan. :)
