Whats the best way to check how much memory the GPU has, i checked with windows and its reporting the card has 1031mb, which cannot be correct, GPUZ does not seem to report anything.

I booted from a Ubuntu live cd and its reporting that the card is 256mb

could anyone with a 256mb or a 512mb card test for me the following

boot from a linux live cd
    from terminal type the following

    lspci | grep VGA

this will come back with something like this
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc R300 AD [Radeon 9500 Pro]

now run the following, changing the numbers to match the above

    lspci -vvv -s 02:00.0

    this will come with

0000:02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc R300 AD [Radeon 9500 Pro] (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: PC Partner Limited: Unknown device 7c07

Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 255
    Region 0: Memory at d8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [ size=128M]
    Region 1: I/O ports at b000
    Region 2: Memory at e9000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Expansion ROM at e8000000 [disabled] [size=128K]
    Capabilities: [58] AGP version 3.0
    Status: RQ=256 Iso- ArqSz=0 Cal=0 SBA+ ITACoh- GART64- HTrans- 64bit- FW+ AGP3+ Rate=x4,x8
    Command: RQ=1 ArqSz=0 Cal=0 SBA+ AGP- GART64- 64bit- FW- Rate=<none>

so this card is reporting 128mb

post what you get with your studios

    cheers

Sorry I am not on my studio at the mo but have you checked BIOS? Very often the BIOS of a laptop will hold the gpu info

Mike, I accessed my studio remotely so although unable to try linux I can answer your question.

If you are using vista, open system information - Start > Accessories > System Tools > System information.

Now expand components and select display. Now check your adapter ram, mine is the 512mb

Don't have a Linux live CD handy but System Information tool and Everest Home Edition both showing 256MB video memory for me, which is correct.

Edit: ATI's Catalyst Control Center showing 1533MB.

strange that xp thinks its a 1gb card, everest detects it fine

windows xp runs fine, no issues so far, battery life seems just as good as vista
